Hello Lynn
I am doing a One-Name Study of the CHANDLER name, and my records may be able to help you.
First, let's consider the 1901 Census. Shoemaker William Chandler aged 58 (so born
1842) born Bethnal Green is living at 16 Elling Fort Road, Hackney in the home of his
brother-in-law. The 1901 Census system produces an error when trying to view the other
occupants of this house - this may only be a temporary error. My guess is that this
William's birth is the William James Chandler birth registered at Bethnal Green in the
September quarter of 1842 (the James probably after his father).
Also in the 1901 Census, Mary Chandler aged 63 (the right age to be Mary Oblein) born at
Bethnal Green is head of household at 5 White Hart Yard, St Andrew, Holborn and operating
a Refreshment Bar. Also there is her daughter Cecilia now Stafford aged 29, an Assistant
in (presumably her mother's) Bar. The Census says she was born at Hackney (my records
show the registration of a Cecilia Chandler birth at Bethnal Green in the December quarter
of 1871). Also at White House Yard is Annie Hood (45) a Servant born at York.
In the 1851 Census, the only Printer named James Chandler I can find is a Silk Printer
aged 27 (just about old enough to be William's father) born at Merton Surrey, living
at 8 Abbey Row, Church St Ward, West Ham, Essex with his wife Eliza aged 25 born Trowse
Norfolk. But there are no children present. If they were William's parents, where is
he? Well, the only suitable William Chandler aged 8 in England is the inmate in the Union
Workhouse at Bethnal Green - his birthplace is shown as Edmonton (but there was no William
Chandler birth registered at Edmonton around 1842, and this could easily be our William) -
and there is one other Chandler in the Workhouse at that time - Thomas Chandler a Widower
aged 33 also said to have been born at Edmonton, whose trade was...... Printer! Could
this Thomas have been James' brother and therefore William's uncle? That seems
unlikely having regard to their birthplaces. I think you need to get hold of the 1842
birth certificate and est!
ablish (hopefully) William's father's and mother's names.
Finally, the son William is probably the William Charles whose birth was registered at
East London in the March quarter of 1854.
How do you know that William was your GGGrandfather?
I will be pleased to try to help you further when you have a little more information.
Best wishes
Dick Chandler
