I am seeking information on John Tunstall Chandler, who may have been born
around 1776-1777 in Halifax Co., VA. I believe he married someone named
Margaret. They had the following children:
- Mary S. Chandler (my ancestor). Born May 9, 1810 in NC and died April 4,
1869 in Tennga, Murrary Co., GA, buried in Liberty Baptist Church cemetery,
Tennga, Georgia. She married Lewis Singleton Deaver, Sr. on August 10, 1831
in Haywood County, NC. Lewis (1804-1893) fought the Civil War (Confederate)
in the TN 5th (McKenzie's) CAV, Co. D. He stayed with Mary until she died
in GA, then came to Bell Co, TX to stay with his sons (John Hamilton Deaver
and Elijah Deaver) until he died and was buried there in Taylor Valley.
- James S. Chandler (1801-1837)
- Catherine Margaret Chandler (1812-?) married William Cuthbertson Wise in
1833 in Haywood Co, NC
- John Chandler (1813-?) married Cela B. Wise
John Tunstall Chandler shows up on the 1830 census in Haywood Co NC and the
1820 census in Greenville Co SC. For some reason, he had the nickname
"General". He does show up as a veteran of the War of 1812, since he served
in the U.S. Army prior to the Peace Establishment in 1815. However, I don't
think he acheived any high rank. He was discharged on 7 Oct 1818 at Pass
Christi near Pensacola FL, on board the Young Spartan. Bounty land was
given to him in Arkansas which he sold. The Chandler Association shows his
parents as John Chandler and Catherine Tunstall of Halifax Co, VA.
Any information about John Tunstall Chandler or his family/ancestors would
be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
