I, too, am brand new at this. My mother's maiden name is Chandler - her
father was William Perley Chandler, born in Eureka, CA, son of Oren Mitchell
Chandler and Elizabeth Gray, but was raised in Findlay, OH by an uncle,
Lafayette Chandler, a minister. Also living nearby was another uncle,
Marion Chandler, a saloonkeeper who according to my mother, was married 5
times, the last one quite young and rumored to be after his Civil War
pension.....but I can't find any of them yet.....
According to her father, they were descended from Roundheads, who found it
expedient to get out of England when Charles II took the throne back in
1650. The only other reference she has is that there were 3 brothers with
"biblical" names (minor prophets, she thinks) who left Massachusetts and
went their separate ways, her direct descendant having gone to Virginia, I
believe.
My grandfather had a brother, Raleigh Lafayette Chandler, who lived in
Albany, OR, was a policeman, actually police chief for a time. And he had a
son named Robert and a daughter, perhaps named Dorothy.....I can't find them
either....
As I said, I am quite new at this. My father's family has many tireless
researchers, so there isn't much I could add there, but my mother is 81 and
only has family stories....no contacts or addresses. It would be nice to
get something while she is still here with us....
