Chandler was not a common surname in Radnorshire (or elsewhere in Wales), so assuming
Edwin and Emily stayed near her home, there should not be many Chandler births in the
area. I can see none registered at Nantmel or Rhayader. The only births in Radnorshire
in the relevant period are Frances registered at Knighton in the September quarter of
1859, Caroline in the June quarter of 1862 registered at Presteigne, and Rhoda in the June
quarter of 1867 also at Presteigne. Presteigne and Knighton are both about 15 miles from
Nantmel. I don't know who the parents of these Chandler infants were - I just know
they were Chandlers. Do any of these three names mean anything to you? Do you know where
Edwin and Emily settled? In the 1881 Census they are living at 14 North Street, Rhayader.
Edwin, then 69, was shown as a Corn Dealer (the perfect job for a Chandler, as that's
one of the meanings of that surname!) born in London, Middlesex, Emily was 46 from Nantmel
as you know, and !
there was also a domestic servant aged 22 named Jane Price, who was also born at Nantmel.
You can e-mail me directly at dchandler(a)sunwave.net if you wish.
Best regards
Dick Chandler
