In a message I posted moments ago I quoted G. Andrews Moriarty as saying,
"WILLIAM CHANDLER (Henry, Thomas, Thomas, Thomas), of Bishops-Stortford, co.
Herts, and of Roxbury, Mass., pointer, immigrant ancestor of the Chandler
family in America, was baptized at Bishops-Stortford 12 Oct. 1595, and died
at Roxbury 26 Jan. 1641/2."
Probably it is clear to all that Moriarty does not mean by "the Chandler
family in America" that this Chandler line was the only or even first
Chandler line in America.
As Moriarty himself says of the Chandler name,
"Like many other names of occupations, it became an hereditary surname
early in the fourteenth century, when family names derived from offices,
occupations, or patronymics came into general use. There were, accordingly,
numerous distinct families of the name, descended from different progenitors
and, as a rule, not related to one another."
