Hi

(By the way, I'm quoting you because these posts go to the Chandler mailing list and this helps other people orient themselves if they are interested in the question.)
I found Burton C. Stites in the 1920 census in Worcester, MA. He's age 27, married to Mary, and has a son Robert. One point is that he reports his father's birthplace as New Jersey (his own as MA and mother's as CT). I had looked for Stites in the 1860 and 1870 census in CT and found none. I did then find an Edward S. Stites in Putnam, Windham, CT in 1910--he was 59, married to Mary and had daughters Evelyn and Estelle. His wife was b. in CT, but he and his daughters were born in NJ. There were very few hits for Stites in MA or CT, but fairly many in NJ. So I had already thought maybe your Luther was from NJ. If he is the brother of this Edward, as I suppose he could be, his parents would both have been b. in NJ as well.
There's a Susan Stites, age 64 in the 1920 census for Lowell. She's the only Susan Stites in MA I can find, and in fact there were only about a half dozen Stites households. This Susan was b. in CT, is a widow, and is living with her daughter Gertrude, age 34. Her father was b. in CT and her mother in MA, so she fits as the Susan Morse Chandler I mentioned earlier --and she would have been born about 1855.
If this begins to sound right I can tell you what George Chandler's book has to say about Susan Morse Chandler's line--she would be of the William and Annis line--immigrants of 1637 to Roxbury, MA--and we would be very distant cousins. This line is known to about 1475 in England when the Chandlers were in fact chandlers--candle makers.

I thought for a moment this would be easy, but this lady doesn't seem to fit. There was a Susan Morse Chandler born to William Chandler and Abigail Billings June 25, 1855. William is said to have lived on Chandler Hill "opposite the house built by his grandfather, Theophilus Chandler." You said your Susan was married to a man b. in 1868, so this doesn't sound right, and the mother isn't right.
Maybe she shows up in a census. I'll try to look.

I'm pretty sure I have the right Theophilus.
Susan's full name is Susan Morse Chandler, her mother is Abigail Morse. Susan was married to Luther Challis Stites b.1868 in Putnam CT.
Their son Burton Chandler Stites b. 6 Sep 1892 in Lowell, MA is my grandfather.
I hope this helps trigger a connection...the lady with all the information died a couple of years ago at the ripe old age of 97 (boy do I wish I started this project before then!)

Two questions: 1. Can you tell us more about Susan so that someone might be able to work back? 2. Are you certain have the right Theophilus?
There were a few Theophilus Chandlers in Windham County at this time.
The Theophilus you mention, according to George Chandler's book, married Sally Maria Rickard and had one son, Theophilus Bradbury Chandler. That son married Rachel Baldwin and had no issue.
George Bowan Chandler, b. 17 June, 1803 to John Winthrop Chandler and Susanna Chandler (a distant realtion) married a Susan Smith and had a dau. Susan who died young.
These people were all in Windham and are at least distantly connected, but if you can give more information about your Susan it could be easier to work out how they're all related.

Is anyone a descendent of any of Theophilus' siblings? (I don't know if Theo was married) They are Barnabus, Nancy, Winthrop Jr., Mary, John, William, Elizabeth.
Also, there may be a George Bowen Chandler as a nephew (son?) of Theo.

Jennie, my father's mother Alice had parents by the name of John and Hetty. Hetty's maiden name was Giddley and she was from Ebford. My dad's father's family lived on Shapter Street. My grandfather was Sidney Copland, he grew up on Shapter Street with one of his brother's Leslie (but called Gerry as a nickname). Leslie, continued to live in the same house after he married. I would like to continue communicating with you via email. My address is bmargason(a)thibault.com. I also have another woman from England that I write to that has been researching the Pym family. Perhaps we could all connect. I will ask her if she wishes to do so. Thank you again, I am relaying all the information I get to my 79 year old father that has a very vivid memory of all of the people he grew up with in Topsham. He is really enjoying this.

I am just beginning to research my grandmother's mother, Emmeline Chandler Dickert, of Newton County. She married Robertt Epperson Dickert and moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Do you know anything about her?
Thanks.
