Through the Online Virginia Library, I've located a Confederate soldier
named Lindsay Chandler of the Pendleton's Vol 19 page 108. Other than a
checkmark next to rank, there are no other indications as to company, troop,
service, etc.
My family has a Lindsay Chandler of Caroline County, b. 1824, to Thilman and
Ursula Chandler. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can determine
if these are the same Lindsay's. My Lindsay would have been about forty
years old when the war started. Seems a little old, but I guess there are
stranger things.
Thanks for any direction.
John

I have a question. My CHANDLER was from Missouri but enlisted at Van Buren,
Arkansas. He served in the Confederacy in Texas Rangers Regiment in Space's
Brigade. My question is where would he be considered a veteran; MO, AR, or
TX?

Hi Chandler List!
Several sons of Robert Chandler, son of Robert, son of John were in
Caroline Co. VA in the early 1700's. They each had several sons. This
information was generously shared with me by the Chander Family Association.
Robert Chandler b. 30 Apr 1659 York Co. VA, d. 1710 New Kent Co. VA
Had sons: Joell, Timothy, Robert, John, Joseph, William and Mary
Timothy and Robert went to the Polecat Creek area, in today's Caroline
Co. about 1715. Brother Joseph was there in 1726. Timothy died in Caroline
Co. VA in 1758. His wife was Justine Woolfolk. His will was written 14 Nov
1757 in Caroline Co. His children were Joseph, Robert, Richard Woolfolk and
Betty.
Robert, son of Timothy, b. c 1727 d. in 1803 Caroline Co. VA, will listed
Henry, William, Edmund, Robert, Fanny, Salley, Molley and Lucy.
Robert, son of Robert, baptized 30 May c 1687, d. 1752 owned a good deal
of land in Caroline Co. He and his wife Elizabeth (Palmer) Butler had:
John, Robert, William, Lucy and Jemima.
According to the Chandler Family Association Newsletter - June 1994,
there were still Chandlers there in the 1780's.
All of these Chandlers descend from John Chandler "the ancient planter"
who came to Jamestown in June 1610, at the age of 10, with Lord Delaware.
This has all been documented by the CFA. I have found there newsletters and
information to be wonderfully documented. There were many Chandlers in the
1600's in Virginia and they can be very confusing, but Joe Burton and others
in that organization have done a beautiful job sorting them out. I hope it
was ok to mention his name, he is the only one I have spoken to personally
several times. They deserve alot of credit and accolades.

Is there a common genealogy for the late 1700's and early 1800 Chandler's of
Hanover and Caroline counties or are these largely unrelated families? It's
interesting to me that there are so many Chandler's in Virginia during that
time period and I'm curious to know whether these (Caroline and Hanover)
Chandler's are descendants of some one or limited number of Chandler
families that emigrated from Scotland/England to Virginia in the 1600's or
did these Chandler's migrate from other colonies during an early American
period? I know from my limited research that there were a number of
Chandler's that emigrated into Massachusetts in the late 1600's and early
1700's. I'm not trying to make any connection, just relating an observation.
Any insight into possible Chandler threads that may connect to the Caroline
and Hanover Counties is much appreciated.
I've only traced my Chandler's, which were white, back to 1796. I know
from census records that there were many black Chandler's in around
Caroline. Is there some connection? Slave owner names? Illegitimate
children? Completely independent families with no connections other than the
coincidence of surname?
Thanks
John

I'm looking for any information on Lindsay Chandler. Spelling variations
I've seen for Lindsay are: Linsy, Lindsey, Serisey and Tinsley T.
Lindsay was married to either or both: Martha A or Mary Ann Smith. I have a
marriage record for Tinsley T to Mary Ann recorded as 9/16/1869. I have an
1870 census record of Lindsay and Martha A having a eight year old boy named
Charles F. Chandler; so, I don't know if Lindsay was married twice or
whether there's a recording error of Mary or Martha's name.
Thanks
