The number system may be helpful to some, personally it seems to be more hindrance than
help. I am not positive of your method: if Benjamin?s are labeled by birth date or wife?
Will try by birth date, but find you have Benjamin I and IV being the same person, with
incorrect wife. You also list Benjamin II with incorrect wife ? wives should be reversed.
But will oblige you, by trying to use your number system, in order to help you.
Earlayne, Again, please check your source and quotes on the following
BENJAMIN and his wife, Rachel (source: DAR Patriot Centennial Index, Pt. 1, Vol. 1
wherein he is identified as an unmarried soldier in 1776, "served in the NC Militia
during the Am. Revolution) 1748 in Maryland, unmarried soldier in NC in 1776, and died
probably in 1834 in Indiana"
?The key to this Benjamin? -- is the key to 1820 census is
Name of family head; number of free white males and females in age categories 0 to 10, 10
to 16, 16 to 18, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, 45 and older;
As you can see there is NO age group of 62 yrs of age ? they are listed as 45 and older.
Would you mind posting book and page number of the Sharpless Book(s): which lists Samuel
Chance?s wife as Rebecca ?Sharpless?
Pleeasee recheck your sources hopefully the Benjamin?s will be easier for you to separate
or consolidate.
Corrections
BENJAMIN I - IV, b. 1740/2 in Bromsgrove, England, m. abt. 1773 Jane HOWARD.
Benjamin's brothers were Wm., Joseph, Thomas, and John. (Think we forgot
Samuel-nothing in writing only a pitiful memory, but seems to be coming back)
BENJAMIN I - IV (lived in NC, Pa., OH, died in Harrison Co., OHIO)., before 1820
Hilda says on pg. 121 that "In the SHARPLESS Family Book, Benj. Chance was born 1740
m. Nov. 1773 to Jane Howard....
" this is correct -- Jane HOWARD's grandmother was a SHARPLESS - believe that is
where the confusion comes in..
Believe BENJAMIN I - IV, b. 1740/2 in Bromsgrove, England
And Samuel are brothers, sons of a William (they came to America after William the
Emigrant - whom I believe to be their Great grandfather) ?
Samuel married a REBECCA (not Rachael ? Earlayne - check source - misquote from
Hilda's book) - they had a son named BENJAMIN II b. abt 1753 MD - he married a Rachel
- think this maybe where the Rachael comes in that is buried in Jersey Co., ILL
The DAR has a incorrect listing on this BENJAMIN II. (this is the NC>Grayson Co., VA
line) - BENJAMIN II is NOT the son of John, Richard
The point could be argued - but feel the mistake has been made through the obvious mix up
between BENJAMIN I - IV and nephew BENJAMIN II.
More than likely someone mixed the two together many years ago, without realizing
"someone" was inquiring about "BENJAMIN II the son of Samuel,
William". -- They gathered information on BENJAMIN I - IV son of William. Then topped
it off with Sharpless - again Jane Howard's line.. It's mind boggling how simple
this really is!! Same line - easy mistake.
Believe one of the errors has been made through not realizing we are descended through
William the Emigrant's son William.
Our family came to America later than William the Emigrant
There were at least two, very possibly three William's behind the BENJAMIN I, b.
1740/2 in Bromsgrove, England, m. Jane HOWARD
"Jane Howard's mother's name was Perry, suggesting that this is where the
Perry name originated in this family." (I could not have said it better myself) --
this being the OHIO line.
Anyway through this line of William the Emigrant's son William - this came to America
later - feel it quite possible that - this line has been twisted into descends of Richard
- it is NOW a BIG twisted mess.
I myself am hoping to find children of BENJAMIN V, born abt 1773/5 in Chester Co., PA ---
the son of BENJAMIN I - IV and Jane Howard ? some of BENJAMIN V children may have been
born in PA ? and spread though Harrison and Coshocton Cos., Ohio by 1850 - and very
possibly farther.
One more note ? since I really do not wish to confuse you -
The wife of BENJAMIN II, son of Samuel, could be a Rachel / Rachael Radd - this lady did
exist and believe she has been mislabeled Rachel / Rachael Sharpless
Believe we may find some of Rachel Radd?s children were born in Virginia and North
Carolina.
