YOUNGSTOWN - Joseph J. Chance, 88, of the city's west side, passed away Tuesday
morning, Oct. 21, 2014, at Hospice House, Poland, Ohio after a lengthy illness.
Joseph was born Jan. 15, 1926, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) a son of the late
Carlos and Angeline Alverenzo Ciancia (Chance), and was a lifelong area resident.
He attended Chaney High School, and later earned his GED while in the service.
Joe served his country during World War II as a navigator and bombardier in the U.S. Air
Force, and was stationed in LaJunta, Colo., Roswell, N.M., and Biloxi, Miss.
He worked for 34 years for Republic Steel, retiring in 1983 as a supervisor in the
B&C shipping department.
In addition, Mr. Chance had a 50-year career as a registered IRS Practitioner, working
with his sons, Terry and Joe.
He was a member of St. Brendan Church in Youngstown.
Joe was proud of his Italian heritage, and he was very proud of his immediate and extended
family.
He enjoyed studying world and American history, and will be truly missed by all who knew
and loved him.
Joe leaves his loving wife of nearly 67 years, Gloria M. Croutch Chance, whom he married
Nov. 1, 1947; three sons, Terry Chance of Austintown, Ohio, Gary (Marianne) Chance of
Berlin Center, Ohio, and Joseph A. (Michele) Chance of Austintown; six grandchildren, Tony
(Julia) Chance, Gina (Jeff) Kirlik, Kerri (Mark) Dixon, Eric (Linda) Chance, Shannon Kohl,
and Joellin Chance; four great-grandchildren, Autumn, Justice, Corrine, and Jack; two
brothers, Albert Chance of Youngstown and Thomas (Marie) Chance of Austintown; and many
nieces and nephews.
Brothers, James, Carl, and Philip Chance, and sisters, Phyllis Romeo, Rose Chance, Anita
Greico, Mary Jane Bielik, Norma Jean Mahon, and Loretta Bucher, preceded him in death.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, at Kinnick Funeral
Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.
Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home, and will continue
at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Ave.
A committal service will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Chance's name to Hospice House, 9803
Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.
