According to the 1920 Federal Census (he wasn't listed in 1910) Thomas was 44 and was
born in Missouri. His father was born Indiana and mother in Iowa. He was the propriator
of a barber shop. His wife was Flora Bairo Chance and was 43, born in Iowa and her
father was born Ohio and mother Iowa. Ceora was 14, Evelyn 11 and Alberta 5 - all the
girls were born in Iowa. Also living with them was Thomas's mother-in-law, Phoebe
Bairo who was 74 and born in Iowa and her parents were both born Germany and she spoke
German.
I tried finding a Thomas Chance (b. Missouri around 1876) in the 1880 census and
couldn't find any. In the 1900 census there is a Thomas W. Chance, born 1874 in
IOWA, and the parent's place of birth matches (father - IN and mother - IA). I've
often found discrepancies in census so this could be it? Worth hanging on to in case you
can get something else to match.
In the 1900 census, this Thomas W.'s father was John (b. Indiana - father b. VA
mother b. KY) and his wife was Sarah (b. Iowa - father b. Virginia and mother b.
unknown). He had a brother Emos and sisters Ada and Tillie.
In the 1880 census, this John J. Chance is in Emporia, Kansas. His wife Nancy is 16 (so
not likely Thomas's mother - nor would Sarah listed above be) This shows that
John's father was born VA and mother was born NC. It could well be that these new
wives were the ones giving the census info and didn't know the real information?
This shows Thomas W. as born 1875 in Iowa.
Can't find Thomas W. Chance in 1910 or 1930.
Hope this helps!
