Message Board Post:
I find an early branch of the Georgia Chances, descended from the Maryland>NC>Ga.
line, with their first landing in Georgia from Stephen Chance, b. 1760 in NC or Md. He
died after 1820 in Burkey Co., Ga. I only show two children for him, James(Jerry?)
Chance, M.D., who was b. in NC (date not found) and who died about 1849 in Burke Co., Ga.,
I only have a sister, Mary Chance in this family.
I only have 4 children as James' children, none of which include a John M., but very
likely there were other siblings since 4 is a small number for families of that era. One
son, James F. Chance, b. Feb. 14, 1825 in Waynesboro, Burke Co., Ga. died in 1892 in
Augusta, Ga. (Munnerlyn township), but he also, did not have a child named John M.
Chance.
You might check the Census and Land Records for these counties during that time frame.
Now then, I do have a John M. Chance, b. Sept. 17, 1875. He was the son of John Henry and
Serintha Rice Chance.
John Henry was b. 1847 in Mississippi and died in Florien, La. in 1904. I don't have
any other data on John M. Chance. There were 4 other siblings, 2 brothers and 2 sisters,
born to this family.
John Henry Chance was the son of James B. Chance (and Lucinda Brent) of Mississippi, who
also died in Florien, La. and was the son of Eli (b. 1793 in Ga.) and Elizabeth Allen
Chance. They were married in St. Helena Parish, La. in 1818. James B. Chance had
brothers: Wm., John, Stephen, and Samual and possibly a Henry, b. 1859.
I hope some of this is helpful to you and believe a search of county, census and land
records should give you the definitive answers you are looking for.
Sincerely,
Earlayne
