Chance researchers
My fathers mother was Ethel Elva Chance (Jul.28,1898-Feb.17,1960)
and I think about her all the time when I do this. I knew and remember
her and her parents, my g grandparents.
I've traced the Chance line back to Orange Co.,NC in the early
1700's. John Chance lived there and had 3 children, Ezekiel, Ruth and
Mary. John must have died early in life, because a paper in the court
house in Carrboro "wills the three children out untill of age".
Ezekiel married Anna Gant in NC, and they had 11 children there.
About 1801, Ezekiel and his family moved to Lincoln Co.,KY, and about
1830, Ezekiel died there. Most of Ezekiel children married there and
some raised there families there. One son (my ancestor), James Chance
(Jan.17,1780-Jun.25,1853) married Agnes Noaks (Mar.16,1784-abt.1860), on
Aug.5,1803 in Stanford, Lincoln Co.,KY.
James and Agnes moved to Franklin Co.,IN, in 1822. 6 of their 7
children were born in KY, and Benjamin Chance was born in Franklin
Co.,IN.
James is buried in the Bowne/Chance cemetery, in Franklin Co.,IN. James and
Agnes Noaks had the following children:
John Chance (Oct.14,1804-Apr.11,1892). Jane Chance (Mar.20,1807-Feb.25,1888).
James Jefferson Chance (1810-Apr.1870). Ruth Chance(Jul.9,1811-Apr.25,1848).
Isabel "Libby"Chance (May 19,1820-Sep.22,1892). William A. Chance (May
23,1821-
Apr.5,1890). Benjamin Chance (Dec.20,1823-Nov.14,1884).
Benjamin Chance married Mary Celinda Myers on Nov.14,1843, and they had
4 children. Mary died Apr.3,1851 and Benjamin married a second time to
Hester/Ester Jane Moore, and they had 8 children.
Of Benjamin and Mary 4 children, one was my ancestor, George W.
Chance (Mar.4,1847-Apr.27,1881). George married Charlotte Barnhart
(Jan.24,1849-Jul.19,1933) on Jun.8,1871 in Franklin Co.,IN.
George and Charlotte had 5 children and one was Alverness Marshall
Chance, my g grandfather....Ethel Elva Chance's father. About all of this
happened in Franklin Co.,IN. Any cousins out there??? Thank you. Tim
