About 1898 he left Missouri and worked at various jobs in the West, one being gold mining
near Republic, Wash. He homesteaded near Wauconda, Okanogan Co., Wash. His papers were
signed by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt on Feb. 27, 1908. This homestead of 160 acres is where
he took his bride, the log cabin being built by himself and his two brothers, Joe and Walt
Summers. This was sold ca 1910-1911 and he purchased the Miller place near by which he
sold ca 1914-1915 when the family moved back to Missouri, the first stop being the home of
his father. The family then lived briefly in Greenfield, Dade Co., Mo. before moving to
near Skiatook, Osage Co., Okla. near the Bradshaw family.
In the fall of 1915, my mother with 4 children and pregnant, boarded the train at Ramona,
Okla. enroute to her mother’s in Republic, Wash. Our father followed in the freight car
with the possessions. The next ranch was purchased near the homestead in Okanogan Co.,
Wash. and was known as the Evan’s place. He also owned another ranch near by which was
known as Jack’s place from which land was deeded for a school house where the three oldest
children first started to school in the winter of 1917. About 1919 the family moved to
Tonasket, Wash. on a 2 ½ acre lot purchased some months previously. This is now a city
park.

My father was employed by the Great Northern Railroad and so with passes the family
boarded the passenger train the 19th of March 1926 with tickets to McEwen, Tenn. via St.
Louis, Mo. and Nashville, Tenn. The tickets to Tenn. were never used. The family arrived
on the 23rd of March at the Washington Summers place near Philadelphia, Mo. Uncle Anthony
met us at Palmyra, Mo. in the surrey.
The next place was a rented farm near Norwood, Wright Co., Mo. The next farm was purchased
in the spring of 1927 in Maries, Co., Mo. near Hayden, Mo. The two youngest attended
Clifty Dale school and the other three the Dixon, Pulaski Co., Mo. In 1939 this farm was
sold to Willie Case and the family moved to the Spence place which adjoined the Wash
Summers farm. After the death of my father in 1940, my brother, Glenn Summers, purchased
the Wash Summers farm through the settlement of the estate. My mother and sister, Dora,
lived there with Glenn.
Glenn sold this farm to my sister, Elsie Jackson and her husband, where she now lives.
Glenn purchased a farm near Ewing, Marion Co., Mo. where he now resides. Our mother made
her home with Glenn until 1954 when she moved to Philadelphia, Mo. She lived in the home
