Message Board Post:
Dear Chance genealogists,
I am researching a Charles Grove, b. c. 1815, York Co., PA, d. c. 1866, OH or MO, married
1841 to Elizabeth Ann Swank in Ellsworth, Mahoning Co., OH. He is my brick wall and thus,
I have been researching various Grove families in OH and PA. My Charles Grove bought his
Loudon, Seneca Co., OH property from Perry Chance and wife Barbary in 1852. My Charles
lived next door to a Elizabeth Grove married to Jacob Kiser in Loudon. Elizabeth Grove
was the daughter of Joseph Grove of Stark Co. OH. In researching the Grove family in
Stark Co. OH, I came across the name Perry Chance and wondered if my Charles Grove knew
him previously in Stark Co. and thus, that would possibly place Charles in Stark Co. and
perhaps connected to the Joseph Grove of Stark Co. So I did some deed research on Perry
Chance to see if he was the same Perry Chance in Seneca Co. married to Barbary.
However, I am confused and hope you can shed some light. The Perry Chance and wife Lavina
of Stark Co. received their land from Peter Chance and wife Sarah on 28 April 1827
according to a later deed in 1838. If Perry Chance was born in 1812, he would have been
only 15 years of age when his father conveyed the land in 1827. [text says: Which tract
of was conveyed unto the said Perry Chance By Peter Chance and Sarah his wife on the
twenty eighth day of April....] I don't have this 1827 document so have to assume
this text is correct.
And my Charles bought his Loudon, Seneca Co. OH land from Perry and wife Barbary in 1852.
IS Perry Chance and wife Lavina of Stark Co. and Perry Chance and wife Barbary of Seneca
Co. the same man?
Any chance [no pun intended] you have run across my Charles Grove in your research?
Thanks for any help you can give, Gail
