Laura,
Your Spencer Chance is likely the son of Levin and Betty Walton Chance of Ewings Neck,
Maurice River Township, Cumberland County, NJ. Levin was a land speculator and there are
tons of deeds in his name in Maurice River Township.
Petersons lived in the neighborhood.
Spencer would be named for his uncle, Spencer Chance (b.1773), who in turn, might have
been named for an uncle or other relative who died c1755. Spencer was a surname in the
area at the time.
Levin and his brother John Chance married sisters. They came with their father, William
Chance, and sister Avis (m. William Cullen) from Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex Co, DE, where
they were all born. Levin I have no birth date for, but he died in 1822. Betty Walton
Chance was born 1764 Oct 30 and died 1815 Feb 9. They married about 1796.
The father, William Chance was born 1725 April in Shepley, Burcot, Yorkshire, England, and
died in 1785 in Maurice River Township, NJ. I know nothing of his wife, Mary.
Several families migrated from Sussex Co (southern), DE, to Maurice River Twp, NJ, (across
the Delaware Bay) near the close of the American Revolution: Chance, Chambers, Carlisle,
Clifton, maybe others.
***Much of this information was researched by Harry Chance, some of which was published in
_The Chance Kinfolk Chronicles_. Other from NJ and DE public records.
Glenn Bingham
