Earlayne.
The family of James Wiley Chance say he was born in Tenn. They say he went from St.Clair Co. Il. to Marion Co. Il.
in 1823.He was a sheriff in Marion Co. Il. at one time. He
died in 1866 and is buried in the Marshall Creek Cem. We will have to keep searching for Alexander's father. I think he is somehow connected to the Chance's of Delaware.

Hi Paul,
My deceased husband was a descendant of Joseph Bell Chance, b. July 4, 1800.
Joseph Bell Chance lived in Tennessee, near Lebanon, in Wilson County, on two tracts of land purchased in February and May, 1826. One tract was for 175 acres on Barton's Creek, the second tract was for 78-1/2 acres on Barton's Creek and Pond Lick Creek. Both are recorded in Land Entry Book, Wilson Co., Tn., pgs. 124 and 160.
Jos. Bell Chance migrated to Texas in Stephen F. Austin's original "Old Three Hundred" company of settlers. He arrived in Texas around 1838. He is listed in Gideon White's book, "1830 Citizens of Texas", along with wife Nancy. They settled at Washinton-on-the Brazos where JBC was Texas' first surveyor... he also acted as an attorney on registering land deeds for other settlers, often receiving a portion of their lands in payment for his labors as surveyor. He received "a labor and grant" of land from Mexico on March 2, 1831.
His name is listed on the Muster Roll of Washington Guards in Washington Co., Tx. The company of men organized by J.B. Chance on April 7, 1836, hung for many years in Independence Hall at Washington-on-Brazos. (This building was closed on the date of my visit to the site, Jan. 14, 2003.) Chance was elected Captain by the men, as was the custom of the day. The title Captain, once bestowed, was a lifetime rank and became a part of his address.
His name is listed on the Monument at the Battle of San Jacinto, which was the final fight by Texian forces in winning Independence from Mexico. His name figures prominently, also, at the Washington-on-the Brazos State Park in Washington Co., Tx., often identified on park signage for his services as Surveyor/Attorney in that first settlement of Texas.
His biography is included in THE HANDBOOK OF TEXAS (can be found online). He is also mentioned in the book INDIAN DEPREDATIONS IN TEXAS by Josiah Wilbarger.
At the time of his death in 1839, Jos. Bell Chance owned or controlled about 28,500 acres of land. By 1841, however, the probate court had sold a portion of this land at prices that ranged from 25 cents to 36 cents per acre. His widow, Nancy, lost the Washington residence (houses, gardens, and lots), the surveying office, and the slave, Jack. She returned to the original land grant property at Yegua Creek to live out her days with her children.... of these, only Charles Coleman "Cole" Chance, ancestor of my husband, survived.
I have a great deal more on him if you desire further.
Earlayne Chance

I am writing to pass along the results of several years' research, done with several other researchers, which led us to ultimately all agree that Alexander III was not the son of Benjamin II, b. 1753 in Md./d. abt. 1827 in Ohio, and Jane Howard Chance, b.1753/d. aft. 1820 (probably) in Harrison Co., Ohio. Benjamin & Jane moved to Ohio, we believe, after the death of his father, Samuel I of Pa. For certain, they moved to Ohio to be closer to their grown sons, Peter and Perry, who migrated to Ohio several years earlier.
Alexander III was moved to Illinois by his son, James Wiley Chance, before 1833, where Alexander died.
One erroneous entry in Hilda Chance's book (see below) on pg. 122 is where all the references to Alexander being a child of Benjamin and Jane Howard Chance has been perpetrated. No documents in Pa. nor Ohio of this family have ever been found naming Alexander as a child of this union. Later researchers/writers have included Alexander's name in this union, but they have not provided any documentation to prove this theory. This connection could have only been gleaned from pg. 122 of Hilda's book. This union has been thoroughly researched and firmly agreed to by those working together on this line several years ago that Alexander is not a child of this union.
Benjamin Chance, b. 1753, is documented to be the son of Samuel I and Rebecca Sharpless Chance of Pa.
The marriage of Jane Howard and Benjamin II is reported in the Chester Monthly Meetings on 8/3/1773, reporting that Jane and Benjamin were married by a Priest on 8/3/1773.... source: Early Church Records of Delaware Co., Vol. 1, pg. 177. This might indicate that Benjamin's family were Catholic ... or Church of England. Henry VIII created the Church of England when he banned Catholicism in the 1500's.
FROM HILDA CHANCE, CHANCE FAMILY, ENGLAND TO AMERICA:
Pg. 121: References to the "untangled Chance, Sharpless, Howard mixture" in Delaware Co.. In "Chester County" Pa.(state given/named later) , she has a document that "Samuel and Rebecca (Sharpless) Chance came to inhabit Middletown in Edgmont Twp., (now in Delaware Co.). Samuel and Rebecca bought with them son, Benjamin, aged 17 and a daughter (Sarah) aged 29. This was in the tenth year of King George III (1770). Dau. Was named Sarah." (confirmed by Karen Peters (granddaughter of Hilda Chance), Post to Genforum on 7-17-2000... on this date, Karen further identifies "Benjamin, b. 1753, m. 1773 to Jane Howard. Samuel I, Benj. II's father, b. 1740".
HERE IS WHERE THE TWO early BENJAMIN'S ORIGINALLY GOT MIXED UP: The suggestion that Alexander and James Wiley Chance were sons of BENJAMIN AND RACHAEL (Hilda names "Sharpless" here, also) Chance comes from Hilda, bottom of pg. 122, where she identifies them, together with the Pa. line of Perry Chance of Ohio, who WAS actually the son of Benjamin II and Jane Howard Chance of Pa>Ohio.
>>>>>The last two paragraphs on this page indicate that Hilda believed Perry (and his son, Peter), (both of Ohio) were linked to Alexander (of Tennessee) and his son, James Wiley Chance (of Tennessee/Illinois). Hilda alludes in these two paragraphs that Perry and Alexander were brothers, which is incorrect. It is not known who Hilda's source was on this data....Perry was the son of Benj. II and Jane Howard. Alexander's parents have yet to be identified but was possibly the son of Benj. I and RachAel Chance, but this has not been documented, according to my research. It is proven that Alexander was the father of both James Wiley Chance and his brother, Joseph Bell Chance of Texas, and others.
Alexander III could also be the son of any of the following Alexander's of Delaware, Md. or Pa.:
In "Calendar of Delaware Wills, New Castle Co., De, 1682-1800, Ancestry.com, we find:
Alexander Chance. Yeoman. Appo. Hd., (d.) Dec. 23, 1772. (will probated:) Jan. 12, 1773. (Wll Bk.)K, (pg.)57. Wife: Elizabeth; dau., Rebecca; sons, Edmund and John; dau., Mary Allfoard, grandson, John Chance; grandson, thomas Allfoard; granddau., Elizabeth Fields." source: Wills Bk., New Castle Co., Del., pg. 71. Also, Index C, pg. 163. This is the first Alexander that Hilda mentioned in her early research.
AGBI lists another Alexander Chance, b.175? in Delaware, served in the Rev. War (ref{813}:914, Vol. 27, pg. 48.
AGBI lists another Alexander Chance, b. 175? in Maryland, as a Head of Family in the first Census (1790), Vol. 27, pg. 48 (AGBI). Unknown if these two Alexanders might be the same person.
.. and a 4th Alexander Chance, b. 175? in PENNSYLVANIA, ref.: "Ten "Series" of "Pennsylvnia Archives" have been so far published in from 5 to 31v. Ea. Philadelphia and Harrisburg. 1852- ( We have indexed Series 2, v.2 and v.8 ( early Pa. marriage recds.) And all the v. of SeriesV. Which contain nearly complete Pa. Rev. War recds.) Ser.5; 1:26, 52 ... Vol. 27, pg. 48. Note: Hilda comments that Pennsylvania was originally part of Delaware!! Thus, is this the same Alexander or 1 of 3?
Note: There is an Alexander Chance, who was commissioned on 2 Feb. 1748 by the "Associates for Bucks County, Pa." (source: Abstracts From the Pennsylvania Gazette, 1748-1755, Scott & Clarke, Gene. Pub. Co., 1977, pg. 4.) This is not the same Alexander Chance of Delaware & Tennessee, but does he connect to the Md., De. Chances?
More data on Alexander III:
1790 - Harford Co., Md., pg. 79:
ALEXANDER CHANCE 1 male over 16 (Alexander),
1 male under 16 (Elijah?)
4 females (who are these females?
Evidently, Alexander came from Montgomery Co., NC to Wilson Co., Tn. bet. 1790-1800.
1800 Montgomery Co., NC Census:
ALEXANDER CHANCE, over 45
Nancy Chance, age 26-44
son, under 10, (Elijah?))
son, under 10, (Joseph Bell, b. 1800) (This would indicate that Jos. Bell Chance was born in Montgomery Co., NC, not Wilson Co., Tn., as previously indicated... or the enumerator came after his birth on July 4, 1800.)
I'll be happy to share what I have on these various lines in Pa. and Ohio.... more work to be done on the NC Benjamin>Alexander link and/or the Delaware>Pa.>Md.> NC links. Hope this information is helpful to those who are continuing work on these lines.
Earlayne
