It has been so long since I have received any messages from the Champlin
mailing list that I thought I had unsubscribed. Glad to see that I am still
subscribed.
My problem:
I am a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and though I did
not use my Champlin lineage for my application I would very much like to
prove that Joseph Champlin provided patriotic service during the
Revolutionary War.
The DAR Patriot Index has posted the following statement in RED across
Joseph Champlin's information:
Notice: FUTURE APPLICANTS MUST PROVE CORRECT SERVICE
This means that:
"The proof of service used to establish this person as a patriot is no
longer valid. Subsequent evaluation of the proof of service may have
determined that the proof is not acceptable under today's standards
(examples: tombstone, obituary, undocumented genealogy or county history,
family tradition); the service belongs to another person of the same name;
the residence of this person during the Revolution is inconsistent with the
service, or multiple people have claimed the same service. Future applicants
must provide proof of service (and possibly residence) that meets current
standards."
I consider this a blemish on the good name of Joseph Champlin and the
service he provided. In order to remove this RED mark I have to have proof
of his service -- not just family "work-of-mouth" history that has been past
down. I can, unfortunately, find no documentation of his service. Is there
anyone that can help me?
I understand that several people have said that "During the Revolution he
melted his silver plate to aid to the "cause". His home was used as a refuge
for patriots."
Does anyone have definitive proof of patriotic service to the cause of
American Independence for Joseph Champlin? The inscription on his tombstone
is not sufficient. It needs to be a receipt for his melted silver plate, a
first person written description of his allowing the use of his home for
patriotic use, or something like that.
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me.
