So happy to see a CHAMPION surname list!
I am a descendant of John CHAMPION who I first found in Mercer County, KY
marrying Mary "Polly" CANNON 13 November 1794.
Marriage Bonds and Consents 1786-1810 Mercer County, Kentucky by ISON:
p. 23 CHAMPION, John and Mary CANNON, November 8, 1794
Bondsman: Edward DAVIS
Consent: Robert and Elizabeth CANNON
Teste.: Will Chaplin, Edward Davis, John Cannon
Robert and Elizabeth were Mary's parents and John CANNON was her brother.
John DAVIS was a long-time friend of the CHAMPION family and was executor
for John's will when he died.
In Frederick County, VA there are land records in 1754 for John CHAMPION and
in Northumberland County, VA there are transactions for a John CHAMPION in
very early 1700's, late 1600's who had a son, John CHAMPION. Trying to tie
all this together. Here is an abstract of his will:
Will (exerpt) of John Champion, written 18 May 1811 and proved 10 Jun 1811.
I give unto my beloved wife Mary a third part of the land so long as she
remains my widow and if she dies or marries then the land to be sold and
divided amongst the boys, to wit: John, Robert, Thomas, James and Joseph.
I
also give her her bed and saddle to dispose of as she sees fit and then she
is
to have a third part of all the rest of the moveable property so long as she
lives or remains my widow and then this third part and all the rest of the
moveable property is to be divided amongst the girls: Ruth, Elizabeth,
Rebecca and Mary. And in order that this my will be justly executed it is
my
desire that my beloved wife and my friend John Davis be my executors.
Witnessed by William T Caldwell, Henry Hardin and James Davis -- Washington
County, Kentucky, Wills, Book B, Page 129.
Henry Hardin married Mary Davis, John's sister, and of course James is
John's brother.
