I didn't find a listing for a Joel Champion, nor any Nutters or McMillans.
Have you checked out the Champions that were centered around Virginia?
They came over early too. Or perhaps we're missing a generation or two to
connect. Have you found them in the census that tells in what state each was
born as well as where their parents were born. That might give you a clue.
To the best of my knowledge, there are three centers in the New World where
Champions started out as emigrants in the early days --
Around the James River in Virginia, where Richard Champion, age 19,
arrived in 1634.
Saybrook, CT, where Henry Champion shows up as early as 1647;
Long Island & then shortly New Jersey, after my Thomas Champion
arrived from England in 1634. ;
and one of the islands like Bahamas or Nassau, about whom I know
almost nothing except they got there early.
I got a lot of good information from the Atlantic County, NJ, historical
society, because my Champions have been pretty thoroughly researched in the
early generations. I was fortunate to find my later Champions in Ruth Crawley
Champion's book, because she was naturally most interested in following her
line. Sorry not to be able to help more.
Happy hunting, and merry Christmas!
