From page 14: Elias Champion "1714-1750/51" m. Mary
Steelman. This Elias
Champion is (here it is!!) a brother of my direct line
ancestor, John
Champion c1712-1766 who m. Elizabeth Boone. Their father is Thomas
Champion, no spouse's name known.
"The Thomas Champion family moved from Queens Co. LI to Great Egg Harbor
about 1719. His father had moved to West Jersey in 1700 and many friends
and relatives from Long Island had settled in the eastern part of Gloucester
County." Ruth Crawley Champion outlines several deed transactions around
Tuckaho involving Thomas Champion, whose oldest son was also named Thomas
Champion. My ancestor John Champion came next, then a sister named Sarah,
then your Elias.
Thomas Champion, father of Elias etc, was born c1675 Queens Co. LI, died
c1731/32 in Gloucester Co NJ. "Will divided among his 3 sons and 1
daughter; one son to care for his wife, but did not give her name." Married
this unknown wife c1702/03. Wish we knew her name.
Thomas c1675 was s/o John Champion & Sarah Williams "of Westbury, Hempstead
Twp LI, and Gloucester Co., Waterford Twp, West Jersey (now Camden, Delaware
Twp). John, the s/o the emigrant Thomas Champion and Frances Jacocks of
Hempstead LI, was born c1647/48 at Hempstead LI, d Aug 1727 in Gloucester
Co., province of West Jersey. Will written 24 Apr 1718, proved 16 Aug 1727.
First wife Sarah Williams m. 1673. 2d m. Martha Walker 12 Jan 1719/20 of
Woodbridge, NJ, no children.
As to emigrant Thomas Champion from England, no parents yet. Frances
Jacocks was d/o Francis Jacocks of Hempstead LI. "The Jacocks family moved
from Stamford CT to Hempstead ab 1663. Family records are at Warwickshire,
England. The name was later shorted to Jacobs." Frances was b c1620, d
c1687? at Hempstead LI, "Early town records referred to her as 'Goody
Champion..."
All these Champions seem to be have been prone to marrying folks named
Townsend, Scull, Steelman, Williams, Ingersoll, etc., and they definitely
liked using the same first names over and over again.
Hope to find more cousins on the list.
