While Ruth Crawley Champion's book doesn't list anybody named Layton, her/my
Champions were at Tuckahoe, NJ. But Ruth followed her Champions west (I
think she and here husband were both Champion descendants) and didn't concentrate
on my family's line, so there is little there after my William Champion
married Experience Ingersoll in 1826 in Gloucester County, NJ, and their children
were born between 1829 and 1849. If she didn't know Nathaniel's wife's
maiden name, I wouldn't be finding anybody under Layton in the index. And you are
right -- these folks loved the name Nathaniel. I find "Nathaniel" indexed
on pp. 12 13 16 19 20 22 23 24 28 32 33 34 35 43 44 45 59 51 52 53 61 87 88 93
& a Nathaniel A on p 63. Do you have a birthdate for him?
There's a Nathaniel b c1690 who married Mary Combe; and a Nathaniel (s/o of
the previous Nathaniel & Mary) of no birthdate who d. 1813 in Gloucester Co.
NJ. Ruth didn't have a spouse's name for him but did have 2 children named in
their grandmother's will. Which wouldn't mean there were no other children
born after Granny died. A Nathaniel 1775-1813 m. Sarah Ingersoll and had 8
children, none named Emmeline. A Nathaniel Champion who died in 1864 (no BD)
is identified as unmarried. So far I haven't checked out half the listed
Nathaniels, alas, but it would help if I had more information on him.
I didn't find your Emeline born 1832. The only Emaline I found is one born
1838 in Indian who had a daughter named Melia b 1862. I don't see a
husband's name. She was d/o Thomas Champion & Elizabeth Ingersoll, of Hamilton
Co.
OH and Morgan Co. IN. Any chance these are yours? I found a couple of
Emma's that didn't seem to fit and two Emily's that didn't seem to fit
either.
Have you checked with the Atlantic County Historical Society? They were
very helpful to me in locating materials on my New Jersey Champions, and they
seem to have lots of information on them. I think they are in Somers Point NJ,
and membership is not expensive.
I also have a recollection that Tuckahoe changed counties abruptly. Where
I'd been looking in Gloucester County I was suddenly forced over to Weymouth
County (or vice versa?) because NJ changed its county borders. I notice that
Ruth's book says Great Eggharbour Twp of Gloucester County became Atlantic
City. Ruth says she sometimes found her Champions written as CAMPION.
Sorry not to be more help.
