This is partly in response to the note from Jan T., dated 1 Oct. 2003.
Great Eggharbour, Great Eggharbour Twp. and Egg Harbor Twp. are all the same place. It was
part of Gloucester County until 1837 when Atlantic County was formed out of Gloucester
County.
At one time, Egg Harbor Twp. included a large part of Atlantic County and through the
years many communities formed their own political entities, separating from the Township.
Communities formed out of Egg Harbor Twp. include Atlantic City, Ventnor City, Margate,
Pleasantville, Northfield, Linwood, Somers Point [location of the Atlantic County
Historical Society] and others.
Tuckahoe is in Atlantic County but was part of Gloucester County until 1837. Weymouth is a
township, also located in Atlantic County.
I'm descended from Daniel INGERSOLL (b. 1680 in Huntington, Long Island) who's
will
was proved in Great Egg Harbor Twp. in 1760. His wife was Elizabeth CHAMPION, daughter of
Thomas CHAMPION and Elizabeth ? .
Does anyone have any idea who Thomas CHAMPION's ancestors are?
Thanks.
Byron G.
