I didn't find anybody I could pinpoint as your Sarah, nor did I find an
Atkinson listed in the index of Ruth Crawley Champion's THE CHAMPION FAMILY:
350 YEARS IN AMERICA.
However, I did find some Champions who went to Burlington Co. NJ, and one of
them had a daughter Sarah, no DOB. Actually, there were so many Sarahs that
I gave up looking. But these Champions had some connection with the Collins
and Scull families.
Catherine Scull, according to page 24, married first Nathaniel Champion, then
John Collins and then an Ingersoll. Not sure how she fits into the scheme
of things, but she's my ancestor.
"John and Catherine Champion had a son, Joseph, born after the
family moved to Burlington County. Several of Catherine's younger
children moved to Burlington County with the family; but after John
Collins died, Catherine bound out her daughter and returned to Great
Eggharbor with two small children, possibly Nathaniel and Joseph."
After that Catherine Scull Champion Collins married somebody named Ingersoll
and is thought to have moved to Hamilton County OH.
These Champions were Quakers. Perhaps you can find something in the Quaker
records. I'm not sure that they cooperated with civil authority on
registering marriages, etc. If your folks do connect up with these
Champions, you will want to get a copy on film of Ruth Champion's book, which
is the only one I know that deals much with the New Jersey Champions.
Happy hunting.

Jan,
"Ruth Champion's book, which
is the only one I know that deals much with the New Jersey Champions."
There is also the records of genealogist H. Clifford Campion, which provided
Ruth with a lot of her material. However, they may hold more secrets. I
think
they are still in posession of the Historical Society of Cape May County on
Rt 9,
North of Cape May Courthouse. Also, it may be that no one has spent a lot
of time
researching CHAMPION in Cumberland County, in the Maurice River Township
area.
If anyone researching in southern NJ ever discovers a Emeline CHAMPION born
abt 1832,
please let me know. Her alleged parents are Nathaniel CHAMPION and Mary (or
Margaret?) LAYTON.
