Does anyone know the parents of Peter Champion who married Sarah Ingersoll?
My understanding is that Sarah Ingersoll was born c1759, but I have no other
dates for her or for Peter Champion. Sarah is d/o Ebenezer & Sarah
Ingersoll.
Ruth Crawley Champion's Champion book mentions four Ingersolls among 12
families who left Great Egg Harbor, NJ, in 1791, for Kentucky. After a year
in KY, the group moved on to Ohio. She quotes a letter written in 1800:
"We are living on the Big Miami River, 10 miles from the Ohio River and 18
miles from Cincinnati."
The Champion book mentions the name of Peter Champion who had married Sarah
Ingersoll, d/o Ebenezer Ingersoll. "It is possible that members of the
Champion family were included in the 12 families, as the Census Index for
Montgomery Co. KY 1782-1820 lists the following Champions from Great Egg
Harbor NJ all lived in Kentucky one year, 1793: Thomas, Catharine, Jon,
Joseph, and Joseph Jr. Daniel Champion is lsited for 1798. Nathan
Champion, brother of Thomas, moved to Hamilton County in 1810..."
She lists records found for several Ingersoll families in Hamilton County,
OH, as well as:
"Sam, Eliza Champion, 1820 census, Whitewater Twp. ...
"Eliza Champion, 1820 Census, Delhi Twp (thought to be mother of Thomas Jr.)
"Elizabeth Champion, 1830 Census, Delhi Twp, 70-80 yrs.
"Horace Champion, 1830 Census, Delhi Twp.
"Thomas Champion, 1830 Census, Delhi Twp.
"Elizabeth Champion (Mrs.), Richmond St., Cincinnati Directory 1830.
"Phoebe Champion m. David Glass, 10 Feb 1820, Cincinnati, by P. Williams,
J.P.
"Patsy Champion m. Thomas Morgan, 9 Nov 1824, Cincinnati, by L. Hopping, JP.
"Thomas Champion m. Martha Moore, 23 Nov. 1826, Cincinnati, by P. Williams,
M.P. (Moved to Morgan County, Indiana ab 1838.)"
Ruth Crawley Champion on p 80 quotes the letter sent to Joseph S. Ingersoll
of Cleves, OH. in 1800: "To Daniel Ingersoll, living on the Big Miami
River, 10 miles from the Ohio, 18 miles from Cincinnati, to be left int he
care of Joel Williams, living in Cincinnati town, innkeeper, 1800. Dear
children, relatives and old acquaintances, This is to inform you that we are
well at present. We received your letter the first part of May which was to
our great satisfaction to hear from you--that you are all well in health and
satisfied in moving to Kentucky....I have Josey, Jacob, Zadey and Esther that
are now living with us at home, all well and hearty. Your brother Abe
Ingersoll is married and has got three children all well. Peter Champion and
your sister Sarah and their family is all well and likewise your sisters and
brothers are well and likewise all the rest of your old acquaintances and
neighbors are well and in good health...." signed by Ebenezer and Sarah
Ingersoll, with additions by Joshua lawrence, James & Hannah Steelman.
Does anybody recognize this Peter Champion who married into the Ingersolls
who stayed in NJ?
I have a Peter Champion 1716-1749 who married Hannah hackara in 1740 & Anna
Ellis in 1746, but the only child I have listed for him is Joseph (no dates).
Peter was a shoemaker by trade, probably apprenticed to his stepfather,
Jonathan Belton. He died intestate 1749. Joseph 1747-1817 married twice
(Rachel Collins 1770, Rhoda Brown 1784) and had Samuel Collins, mary, William
Cooper, Joseph Jr., Charles, John, Rachel, Benjamin, Richard Brown. --Nobody
there named Peter.
in fact, there are no other men named Peter Champion in Ruth Crawley
Champion's book. Does anybody have a likely candidate?
