My Champions came from Tuckahoe, and my ancestors include Somers and Smith.
But somehow I can't quite match up your names and mine. (We also married
into Steelman and Scull families.)
My great-grandfather was Smith Champion (1835-1916), s/o William and
Experience Ingersoll Champion, who left Tuckahoe in 1846 and moved to
Sangamon County, IL. I found information about my William Champion (1799-
1876) in Ruth Crawley Champion's book, THE CHAMPION FAMILY: 350 YEARS IN
AMERICA.
The book is now out of print, and Ruth died some years ago. However, I
found it on film through the LDS Family History Library, which ordered the
film in for me for something like $3.00 or so. It was worth every penny,
because before that I had only found information on the Saybrook CT Champions
and the Virginia Champions. Ruth's book concentrates on the NJ Champions.
The Atlantic County Historical Society in NJ has lots on these families and
will send you copies if you join at a moderate cost. They also have lots on
our Somers and Smiths. The Atlantic County Historical Society is at Somers
Point, NJ, and you can bet they know about our Somers families.
You didn't give dates for your Nathaniel Champion. My William is s/o Rev.
Joseph Champion (1768-1828)and Sarah Smith (1778-1854); Rev. Joseph Champion
was third son of Nathaniel Champion who died in 1813. His wife was Sarah
Ingersoll who died 1855.
I did find on page 30 a Daniel Champion Jr. born in 1788 (s/o Daniel Champion
& Ruhame Ingersoll) who married a Mary Smith and moved to Ohio. They had a
son named Somers Townsend Champion. I don't know if there were other
children.
Anyway, I didn't find Charles Smith in the index, nor did I find Hanna
Somers. No Richard Smith. The Smiths are Amelia, Cornelia, Elijah,
Elizabeth, Ernest, Hannah, Jeremiah, Jesse, John, Jonathan Jr., Joseph, Mary,
Phebe, Sarah and William. (Sarah and William belong to me.) The Somers
listings are sparser: Charles, Richard, Millicent. No Shute.
But somehow I figure we are connected and that Ruth's book just follows
different lines or doesn't go far enough.
