Folks, I don't know how strict Cliff is with limiting discussions on his
list, but on mine I try to keep folks on track with the purpose of the
list. However, I am also flexible when something serious happens and
folks need or want to talk about what is happening...particularly when a
hurricane, flooding, earthquake or other major event occurs. That being
said, please know that if you wish to discuss Hurricane Ivan to provide
updates and the like, I will allow it.
I would also like to tell you about a list I host on Rootsweb called
DisasterRelay. Anyone is welcome to join. Listmembers for the most
part are volunteers who will relay messages during catastrophic events.
As you may know, when an emergency strikes such as mentioned above, the
telephone companies shut down or severely limit incoming calls to the
affected area. However, those in the affected region can (with phone
lines restored) make calls outside their area. This is where the
volunteers come in. If someone is trying to reach a loved one during a
disaster, they contact me (or Rose, who helps me coordinate the
requests) and we ask for a volunteer to help. They will make long
distance calls if necessary and reimbursement is *never* requested.
We've had this type of relay work very well many times in the several
years I've had the list on Rootsweb.
