Hello,
I've been asked to help trace the African -American family of Sarah Goss who
lived near Texarkana and had 14 children. That was probably around 1900.
Contact between those families was lost when they left the Texarkana area
looking for work. That was probably in the 1930s. Also, the mother of my
contact lost both her parents when she was about 9 years old, or roughly, 1949 -
1950. Because of those breaks in the relationship very few dates are known.
Here is what I know for sure.
My friend is Alma Garrett, born Oakland, CA in 1957. Her mother is Barbara
Ann GAINES, (not Grimes) born Sept. 1940 in Texas. Barbara Ann was raised by
foster parents in Oakland, CA after both parents died. She married Alvin
Henderson Garrett in Oakland.
Barbara Ann (b. Sept. 1940, Greenville, TX) is the daughter of Ray GAINES,
Jr. and Johnnie Lulu CHAMPION. Ray GAINES Jr. is the son of Ray GAINES, Sr.
and Annie GOSS. Annie is the daughter of Sarah GOSS of Texarkana. Annie is
one of 14 children of Sarah but we only know names of 4 of the 14.
Besides Annie there was one set of twins, Luvella and Novella, and a girl
named Willie Mae. We don't have any birthdates. We don't know if GOSS was
Sarah's maiden name -- or who she married, if she ever married. We don't even
know
how many of her 14 children lived. Unfortunately, we don't know which side
of the Texas - Arkansas line she lived on.
