From the McLouth Times, Jefferson County, KS, May 31, 1889:
"Gone to Her Rest.
"On Saturday morning last Mrs. Experience Champion died, at the
residence of her son-in-law, Charles H. Phinney, in Sarcoxie Township, after
a lingering illness at the advanced age of eighty years.
"Mrs. Champion was born in the state of New Jersey, her maiden name
being Ingersoll; she was married to William Champion, March 4, 1826; the
couple moved to Illinois at an early date where they resided until 1875, when
they moved to this county; she leaves eight living children, four sons and
four daughters, three sons, John, Smith, and Abel Champion, and one
daughter, Mrs. Sarah Phinney, reside in this vicinity; Thomas Champion and
Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell who resides in Illinois; Mrs. Mary Mowry in St.
Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Rachael Phinney in Providence, R.I., all of whom
sincerely mourn her loss.
"Her funeral took place at the residence of C. H. Phinney, Sunday
morning at 9 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. C J Stark of this
city. Her remains were interred in Union cemetery just south of this city
beside her husband who died in 1876."
