Now these folks are definitely in the Ruth Crawley Champion book.
Nathaniel Champion born 19 February 1775 was 6th son of Nathaniel Champion
and Catherine Scull. (He is Generation VI in America, in the book, lineage
identified as (1) Thomas (2) John (3) Thomas (4) John (5) Nathaniel. Those
guys are all in the book, so I can give you what it has on them.
Anyway Nathaniel was born Feb 19 1775, died 28 Sept 1849, and married
Temperance 6 Nov 1797.
Temperance was d/o Jonathan Scull & _________. She was born (it says) same
date as her husband and died February 27 1859.
Their children were:
(1) Abilgail Champion Molander 1798-1826 m. Ernest Molander (children).
(2) Mary Champion b 1799.
(3) David Champion 1801-1873 m. Rheuhamah Steelman. (7 children).
(4) Mark Townsend Champion (1805-1886) m. Sarah Ann Steelman. (6
children).
(5) George Washington Champion 1806-1894 m. Abigail Budd. (4 children)
(6) Rachel Champion 1808-1826.
(7) Elizabeth Ann Champion 1810-1874 m. Joseph Steelman.
(8) Margaret Champion b 1812.
(9) Hannah Ann Champion 1819-1882 m. Capt. Theoplelus Weeks.
Of the names listed for children of the sons above, none was a Sarah.
As to Nathaniel's father, Nathaniel Champion and wife Catherine Scull of
Great Eggharbour Twp, Gloucester County (now Atlantic City) NJ, this is my
direct line ancestor. Here's where your line and mine apparently split.
Anyway, according to Ruth's book, Nathaniel the father was born c1741 and
died c 1775/77. He was the son of John Champion and Elizabeth Boone. He
married Catherine Scull 4 July 1762 by "Governor's license." I would like
to know what being married by Governor's license means.
Ruth's book does not say whose daughter Catherine Scull is, doesn't have a
DOB for her, and says she possibly died in Hamilton County OH. At any
rate, she married (2) John Collins of Gloucester County in 1777. "John and
Catherine Champion had a son, Joseph, born after the family moved to
Burlington County. Several of Catherine's younger children moved to
Burlington County with the family; but after John Collins died, Catherine
bound out her daughter and returned to Great Eggharbor with two small
children, possibly Nathaniel and Joseph." (3) she married an Ingersoll in
1790. "Catherine bound out two small children and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio
in the early 1790s." Since your line connects with Nathaniel and mine with
his brother Joseph, it would be very interesting to find out more about this
binding out process. I believe there are records about bounds but don't
know quite where to look for them. Anyway, their mother is in my records
as Catherine Scull Champion Collins Ingersoll.
Do you want me to go on back with this Nathaniel's lineage? And whatever I
can find on the Scull/Scholl folks?
