Hi Champions,
Quite some time ago I sent the message that follows. A very interesting
follow-up to that original message is now included. It should bring a good
feeling to read a "reward" of this great interest of ours.
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I have been seeking the family of the Champions from Cornwall, who settled
in Central City, Colorado.
Several weeks ago I received an e-mail from a second cousin from Washington
state. She found my web site by entering her grandfather's name WILLIAM
CHAMPION Kellogg, ID into Google search.
We have been exchanging e-mails fast and furiously and connecting many
family dots. With her information I now know which CHAMPIONS in my line
moved to eastern Washington and Western Idaho...and that they probably
worked in the Bunker Hill mines.
She knows of several Champions buried in Kellogg, ID and plans a trip there
soon to connect more dots. Her dad has added quite a lot of background as
well as digging out photos for a second look.
I plan on traveling there in the next month to meet her and her family.
This is so exciting and I wanted to share it with you all.
FOLLOW-UP
I met with my new found Champion cousin and her dad in Seattle in late
April. The father indicated that his farther didn't talk of his parents and
their siblings, other than that they came from Central City, Colorado to
mine in Idaho.
He (the father) didn't even know where his grandparents were buried. It was
likely they were buried in Kellogg, ID but they were not able to find a
stone or record.
I was able to show them photos of the elusive couple taken in Central City,
his Obituary indicating burial in Central City, and information on her
second marriage. With knowledge of her second married name, who did I find
when I visited the cemetery in Kellogg last week??? You guessed it! There,
near other Champions, was Grace A. Fowler 1874 - 1932 and her second
husband William Fowler.
Grace was born Grace Ann Stephens in Central City, CO. She married William
John Champion in Central City in 1892. They had 4 children. William John
Champion died in 1906 and was buried in Central City, CO. Grace Ann Married
William Fowler in 1914. The couple, with her 3 living children moved to the
areas of the Spokane, WA, Coeur 'D Alene and Kellogg, ID.
Our guess is that because the new husband wasn't the real father, the
families drifted apart. Contributing was the fact that Grace Ann died in
1932, her son William Hugh Champion died in 1973 and the father of my new
cousin was born in 1946.
Isn't this a great hobby.....
