Thanks to everyone that responded so quickly! The information that I have about Edward
as Phillis Champions father comes from different family genealogy materials that I have
found online as well as the book ,"A Family Called Fort", that implies Edward
as her father. I have not proven that myself, however others seem comfortable with
that, and I think much of that comfort comes from Elizabeth Champion having married Joseph
Poole after Edward's death. Her son, Phillis's brother, was named Edward as is
stated in Poole's will. There certainly seems to be differing stories as to when
and how Edward Champion first came to America. Did he come as headright for Thomas
Swann, this makes sense to me, or some other way? Did he marry Elizabeth here or in
England? My GUESS is England. From
Ancestry.com comes this:
"CHAMPION OF SURRY AND ISLE OF WIGHT
Edward Champion, the first of his name in Surry, came there with Col. William Swann.
Thomas Swann, the Colonel's son used Edward Champion's name Edward Swann's
and that of twenty-two other persons as headrights, Mar. 1, 1638"...........etc.
My own feeling is, we know for sure Elizabeth had a son Edward, and that Edward no doubt
was named for the father.
I have a predicament at the moment. We are in the middle of a preparing to move from CA
to PA and will not have a lot of time to spend on this right now. Believe me, genealogy
is a lot more fun and interesting than sorting and packing, however now that I know there
are others out there with the same family I will look forward to spending more time with
the Champions. I am compulsive about checking email so will certainly be reading, just
may not have time to do much looking up information.
