To be honest, I have no idea. I'm actually researching my FULLER line, and
the only Champion I have (as a surname, that is) is from CT. Sibyl Champion
m. Joshua FULLER , and 5 of their 8 children were b. in Kent CT. They had
moved to Luzerne Co. PA, where Joshua's parents and many of his siblings had
moved after the Rev. War, by 1790. They were in the areas of Huntsville and
Plymouth, PA.
Sibyl and Joshua's son Stephen is my ggg grandfather. One of Stephen's sons
was named Champion FULLER (my gg grandfather), and one of Champion's sons
was named Edward Champion FULLER. So the name has carried down, but not as a
surname.
I know almost nothing about Sibyl's parents and family. I know quite a few
families from Kent moved to PA; it's possible that her family moved out that
way, also. Do you have possible connections?
I'm trying to prove an old family genealogy--one of those equally wonderful
and frustrating items that traces out one's line, but gives next to no
sources! So does anyone recognize my Sibyl? Or know of Champion families in
LItchfield Co., CT in the early-mid 18th c.?
Cheers,
Rachel

Thanks, Nancy, for the kind welcome! And hello to everyone on the list.
And now, for my Champion...
I'm searching for more information on Sibyl Champion of CT. She married Joshua FULLER abt 1777. Joshua was the son of Joseph FULLER and Zerviah HILL, and was b. 11 July 1753 in Kent, CT. He d. 6 May 1815 and is buried in Huntsville, PA, where most of his family had moved after the Revolutionary War.
Joshua and Sibyl had 8 children: Silranns, Lydia, Philetus, Lavinia, Annis, Abraham, and Stephen.
I've seen information on Sibyl that indicates she is the daughter of Daniel and Esther Champion and was b. abt. 1756 in Litchfield Co., CT. However, I don't have any verification for this.
One of Stephen Fuller's sons was named Champion, and one of Champion's sons was named Edward Champion, so the Champion name carried down for a few generations in my family. I'm looking to verify my Mayflower lineage (Joshua FULLER was a 5th gen. descendant of the Mayflower Fullers), but I'd also like to know more about the Champion branch.
Does anyone recognize Sibyl, or have suggestions as to where I can go next? I'd appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks so much.
Cheers!
Rachel

Dear Nancy;
You are doing a great job with the Champion List. Thank you and
Cliff very much for providing us this means to exchange information and
learn more about our ancestors.
Champions were here from the beginning of this nation and have
contributed positively ever since. General Henry Champion was responsible
for feeding and outfitting the troops under General George Washington's
command at the birth of this great nation. No Army could succeed without
food and weapons and transportation. We are all familiar with the stories
of the poverty of our nation's first army. In spite of these hardships
and lack of money, Henry managed to supply the troops.
Early Champions were soldiers, farmers, doctors, lawyers,
statesmen, preachers and just plain, good, and hardy frontiersmen; many
lawmen among them. This includes the Champion women, of course. The
Mormons, who have helped tremendously, in our genealogical research, tell
us that a Champion lady was the mother of, I believe, Joseph Smith.
Champions have been here for all major events, mostly
contributing quietly and without fanfare; the mark of a true Champion.
Yours truly;
Bob Champion

Dear Garrisons
I am also researching the family line of Jacob Shadrach, from South
Carolina... [son of William and Tabitha (Green) Champion] husband of Ann
Martin. In my information, taken from a book entitled "Morgans of Wilcox and
Clarke Counties Alabama and Allied Families" by Helen Morgan Akens and Sheldon
LeGrande Morgan, I found information on this lineage. Some of their
information was taken from "A Champion Lineage: An Informal Family History"
compiled by Lorena C. and Wilbur E. Shelburne, Myra Champion, Joseph Dowe and
Jewel Catherine Champion. Have you researched either of these two books?
I have information from the first one I listed. In the Champion section of
the Morgan book, it has listed Jacob and Ann's children, and list Mary as
being "Mary Bailey" in the will of Jacob. There is no mention of her husband's
name there. In 1832, the deceased Mary's heirs claimed her inheritance from
her father's estate, presented from South Carolina. This is all the
information I found in this Morgan book. Perhaps more information can be
found in the second mentioned.
Three of Jacob and Ann's sons came to Alabama, Robert, William and John. It
is through John that I believe I came to be. I have John marrying Elinor
McKee in 1808 in Kershaw County, SC and their 12 children, the seventh child
being the first born in Alabama, in 1820. By 1835, Elinor dies, and John
marries Mary Stewart and has two more daughters, one in 1845 and the
other1847. Information, that I had previously acquired, led me to believe
that John Thomas Champion, born 1844 was a son of Jacob and Ann, but that is
impossible if Ann died by 1835. There is no mention of John Thomas in the
book. John Thomas Champion married three times, Christine Kelly, Laura Doyle
and Arrena Morgan. My lineage is proven from John and Arrena on to me...I
am lost when trying to figure who actually came between, or before John Thomas
Champion and Jacob Shadrach Champion. I am hoping that I am on the right
tract! Good Luck finding your Mary's line!
