Hi Roscoe,
Thanks for your message. I am an English Champion with roots firmly
established in London for at least the last 200 years. I shall be putting
together a few webpages with my family details soon and of contacts made so
watch this space! Glad to see the Mormans are now online, now we'll have to
get the governments to get their act together and do the same. Our public
records are still held in big dusty old books in the public records office
guarded by little dusty old men who have just about mastered the abacus :o)
Best Regards

Champent1@ aol.com is for Champion Enterprises owned by Roscoe L. Champion in
Albuquerque, NM. Glad to be aboard. Looking forward to finding which of us
have common ancestors.
My lineage goes from me, Roscoe L. Champion to Raymond M. Champion, to
Mattison W. Champion to George Wesley Champion and on to Thomas Jefferson
Champion. I lose track of anyone above T.J.C. Do any of these ring a bell
with anyone? Would love to e-mail you if you have some of these in common.

Hello. I'm new to this list. My mother was a Champion, and most of what
we know about our line of Champions comes from Ruth Crawley Champion's book,
which was the first source we found that didn't deal with the Saybrook
Champions.
Ours were in Tuckahoe New Jersey till about 1846, when William & Experience
Ingersoll Champion moved their family to Sangamon County, IL (Pleasant
Plains). William was born 1/12/1799 at Tuckahoe, married Experience
4/10/1826 in Weymouth Twp, Gloucester Co. NJ, and died 12/7/1875 at McLouth,
KS.
I am attempting to keep track of all the descendants of William & Experience
Champion ( we had our first reunion at Lawrence, KS, in 1993), but I want to
know more about the whole line.
Our immigrant ancestor was Thomas Champion, born c1615 in England, who left
Ashford, Kent, sandwich County, on the ship Hercules of Sandwich in the
spring of 1634. He settled at Hempstead, Long Island, married Frances
Jacocks c1642 in Hempstead, died c1682 at Hempstead.
I would be interested in sharing information on these folks.

We really have no one who can continue as a part of the association and
would like to unsubscribe. I do not have Cliff's address, so I would
appreciate it if you would let him know that I would like to discontinue.
Thank you very much.

researching and hope that you will enjoy being a part of our family.
If I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Again, welcome to our list and we hope you enjoy your stay with us :-)

Hi Ken,
This is great news :-) Anytime we find a clue or have a break-through
of any sort, it's worth sharing and even celebrating!!
Treat yourself to something you really like :-) And here's hoping you
find more clues and let us know of any results.
Nancy
Hello everybody.....
I just wanted to post the fact that I found out a little bit more about
my rather elusive Isaac CHAMPION today. I found his marriage to
Elizabeth TREVORROW in St. Ives on the 19th September, 1838. His father
was Wiliam CHAMPION, and her father was John TREVORROW. All of them
were miners.
Now what I have to do is find them in the 1851 census for St Ives. They
are not there for the 1841 census, for some reason, but they had all
their children in that area (Trelion in St. Ives, and ChiangWeal) during
the 1840's.
Cheers from Ken Ubsdell in Oakland, California.

The flowers were beautiful!! That you SO much. We certainly appreciate
your thoughtfulness and generosity. For those of you who have not heard
from me, I want to thank you for what her association with you meant. I
have read all of your messages and am overwhelmed by the nice comments
you have made.
The very best to all of you as you continue your quest for ancestors.

Good Afternoon,
I'd like to extend a warm welcome to our new member,
JCham90528(a)aol.com. I'm sorry I don't have your name, just an email
address. Please let me encourage you to post your information, queries,
etc. to the list so that everyone will know who you are researching.
Ours is a 'user friendly' list and we hope this will make you
comfortable in posting your comments.
Again, welcome to the list and we hope you enjoy your stay with us :-)

Dear Larry,
Out of respect for Pat, Cliff and I have agreed to leave the
hostess/host position open for awhile. I'll be temporarily filling in
and watching over the list until the appropriate time.
Cliff will help to unsubscribe you from the list, although we truly
hate to lose contact with you. Please know that you and your family are
always welcome to come back and 'visit' with us anytime. If someone in
your family wants to pick up the torch and carry on Pat's research,
always know you have a home with us :-)
May the Lord be with you and your family. May His presence bring you
peace and may you always know that Pat was truly loved by so many
people.
Sincerely,
Nancy E Parr
I assume that you have replaced Pat as the hostess of her list or you
will very soon. I, of course, will not be continuing as a part of the
association. Would you please let me know what I need to do to cancel.
It sounds like you all are having a great time searching for ancestors
(I hope you don't find anything you wish you didn't!! Pat's Dad always
said jokingly that we shouldn't be too curious about who our ancestors
are.), and I hope all of that will continue.
Thanks for all you meant to Pat. I have read all of your messages and
am exceedingly impressed with all that she meant to the association.
Larry
Hello Shirley,
Welcome to the Champion list :-) This is a 'user friendly' list and I
hope this will make you feel more at ease and comfortable. Like the
rest of us, we all have to learn to crawl before walking. If you have
any 'simple' computer or genealogy questions, please don't be embarrased
to post them to the list. I'm sure someone will be able to help you
find an answer. (I say simple because I might can help with the simple
ones)
Thanks for your offer to do lookups from the cd. Maybe you'll have a
few 'takers' on your offer.
I'd also like to welcome another new subscriber Sidney Bailey! Again,
welcome to the list and we hope you enjoy your stay here :-)
Regards,
Nancy E Parr

Hello Shirley....
Welcome to the world of researching ancestors...it becomes obsessive, so
be prepared. I think that you will find a whole lot of people
researching CHAMPION's....the ones that I am interested in come from
Cornwall, around the St. Ives and Lelant areas (so far). My main
interest is an Isaac CHAMPION who worked as a miner around St. Ives.
One of his children was Martha Jane CHAMPION, my g grandmother.
Have fun!

I am a newbie, just joined and also new to genealogy and computers, so hope
you will bear with me.
I am researching a Jane Champion from Surrey, England, born in the early
1860's. She married a Charles Beagley and they lived at 5 Mayleigh Cottages,
Petersham, Surrey. They had 6 children, one of whom was Reginald Montrose
my Grandfather. Is anyone else researching Champions in UK?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
I have the Vital Records Index British Isles dating from 1538 to 1888 on
CDrom if anyone would like me to look anything up for them I would be glad
to. It contains 5 million births, christenings and marriages and nothing
about any of my family!

I have quite a bit of information on CHAMPIONs that has been gleaned from
different sources....people, books, microfilm....etc. Will post my line
here and maybe somebody will recognize it...I hope!! First of all, the
first reference which might be my line is in Frederick County, VA in 1754
where there is a land deed for John CHAMPION....then in 1777, a will for
Joseph CHAMPION naming his wife, Rosannah, his brothers John, James and
Thomas and James' son, John CHAMPION. Other names allied with this family
here are RAWLINGS and STEPHENSON....
My John CHAMPION was in Washington and Mercer County, Kentucky. He marries
Mary "Polly" CANNON in Mercer County in 1794.
Will post bits and pieces and maybe someone will recognize an allied
family...I hope!
Will of John Champion:
"Being low in body, etc.
I give unto my beloved wife Mary a third part of the land so long as she
remains my widow and if she dies or marries then the land to be sold and
divided amongst the boys to wit: John, Robert, Thomas, James and Joseph. I
also give her her bed and saddle to dispose of as she sees fit and then she
is to have a third part of all the rest of the movable property so llong as
she lives or remains my widow and then this third part and all the rest of
the movable is to be divided amongst the girls to wit: Ruth, Elizabeth,
Rebecca, and Mary. And in order that this my will be justly executed it is
my desire that my beloved wife Mary and my friend John Davis be my
executors.
Witnesses: William T. Cardell, Henry Hardin, James Davis. John Champion
makes his X mark," Book B, p. 120 (perhaps 0 is a 9)
Henry Hardin married Mary Davis, John's sister, and of course James is
John's
brother. Don't know who William T Caldwell is.

Found the following deed in Frederick County, VA:
5 November 1754 CHAMPION, John to John Lindsey, DEED, V. 3, p. 380
**********************************************
Per correspondence with Norma Miller, 4865 152nd Place S.E., Bellevue, WA
98006-3604:
There was a John CHAMPION in Frederick County, VA in 1760. I don't know
what happened to him. Part of Frederick County became Berkeley County
(later West Virginia). This may have been the John CHAMPION who appeared
later in Berkeley County, Virginia or it may have been the John CHAMPION who
purchased land in Granville County, North Carolina in 1761. (according to
a researcher of the John in Granville County, NC...these two John CHAMPION's
are "two separate" individuals)
The will of Joseph CHAMPION was recorded April 21, 1778 in Berkeley County,
WV, naming his wife Rosanna, brothers Thomas and John. The estate was
settle April 15, 1783. (Johnston, Rosa B., West Virginia
Settlements )1753-1850).
RECONSTRUCTED CENSUS, 1774-1810, by Max C. Grove gave the following entries
for Berkeley Co., West Virginia:
Rent rolls, 1775-1781, listed Stephenson CHAMPION with 309 acres; John
CAMPION with 319
acres and John CAMPION with 20 acres.
Berkeley County list, 1782: John CHAMPION, James CHAMPION.
Robert Stewart's List No. 8, Tithables, 1783: John CHAMPION, 3 whites, 4
horses, 6 cattle.
James CHAMPION, 1 white, 2 horses, 5 cattle.
Fothergill, Augusta B. and John mark Naugle: VIRGINIA, 1782-87: James
CHAMPION, 1; John CHAMPION, 3.
Cornstock, Jim, editor: WEST VIRGINIA HERITAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA., Richmond, VA.
1976, Vol. 5, page 926:
James CHAMPION, Berkeley County, Revolutionary War non-military patriot,
listed by
Anne Waller Reddy.
John CHAMPION, Berkeley County, Revolutionary War non-patriot, listed by
Anne Waller
Reddy. (these records might be in the card file at Richmond, VA)
Berkeley County Poll Tax 1792: John CHAMPION, Sr., 110 acres, (The title
"Sr." implies there was a John CHAMPION, Jr., maybe yours who went to
Kentucky?)
In Washington County, Kentucky the 1810 census lists John and Thomas
CHAMPION as heads of households. )the will of Jos. CHAMPION in Berkeley
County named two brothers, Thomas and John).
John was 25-45 years of age born 1755-1785), his wife the same age: there
were 5 males and
4 females under the age of 10? (That's a lot of children in 10
years...maybe it is not accurate.
Thomas CHAMPION was over 45 years of age, with a female of the same age.
There were
9 males listed with themn, 3 of whom were 10 and under; 2 were 10 to 16; 4
were 16-25.

Old McMurtry genealogy papers say:
John Champion of Irish descent, born in Virginia and married Mary "Polly"
CANNON, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth CANNON, in Mercer County, Kentucky
13 November 1794. She was born 25 March 1773, died 12 January 1847. She
was very religious and at one time joined the Shakers. She lived the last
years of her life with her daughter, Ruth Champion McMurtry. She is buried
in the Rice/ Blue Cemetery in Wautaga, Knox Co., Illinois. Their children
were Ruth, John, James, Thomas, Joseph, Elizabeth, Rebecca.

On May 22, 1811, John DAVIS, son of Edward DAVIS, was named an Executor of
the will of his long-time
friend John Champion. The estate, recorded in Washington County, Kentucky,
was witnessed by Henry Hardin and James Davis.

Per Anne Baker from Kentucky, she says:
THE CHAMPIONS LIVED ON THE HIGHEST HILL/SPOT IN MERCER COUNTY, Kentucky - ON
US 68 JUST BEFORE YOU START TO GO DOWN THE CLIFTS TO BROOKLYN TO CROSS THE
RIVER.
**********************
Jan, John Champion (also spelled Campion) was in Berkeley County on the
rent rolls in 1772. In 1777 in addition to the first John there was a 2nd
John Champion(of Rose). There was also a Champion Stephenson in 1777.>
I found these items on the Colonial Ameria pre-1790 census index/tax lists
CD #136.
A John and Thomas Camion were in Maryland, John on the S.side Patapsco
hundred 1701 and Thomas in Middle River Hundred 1705.
Have you looked the history of the name up? There was Richard Champion in
the early Virginia Colony in 1607.
>
In 1788 there was a Juan Champion from VA in the Natchez District MS.
Champions were also in New England before 1700.
Joanne
Martinsburg, WV

Have also heard from a researcher who has John CHAMPION in Northumberland
County, VA early 1700's....can't make a connection as yet.....
Anything ring a bell out there? Thanks for reading and at least all this
will go in the Archives for future reference by genealogists long after
we're gone....if everyone on the list could post some pertinent data/facts,
who knows what we might turn up and think how we'll be helping the
others....
Jan
Hi Jan,
Thanks for such an interesting and informative post :-) I'm afraid
your names don't 'ring a bell' just now but I'll keep looking.
I'll post my Champion connections in the next day or so and want to
encourage everyone to do the same at your convenience.
This is a 'user friendly' list and please let me encourage you to send
any information, queries, etc. to the list so that everyone can see who
you are researching. If you run across web sites that you think will be
helpful, feel free to post those to the list as well. Although Rootsweb
will not allow attachments to be sent to their mailing lists, you can do
so privately between one another. So if anyone has a scanner and wants
to scan items and share them, please do so :-) You can always drop a
note to the list stating what the scanned item is and see if anyone is
interested. I have a scanner but am a 'newbie' so I'm afraid I'm of no
help in this area as yet :-)
I need to check and see if we have any new members. If you've joined
within the past week and haven't received a welcome note, please let me
know. We want everyone to feel welcome here on the Champion list and we
welcome any suggestions on how to make the list work even more 'user
friendly'.
Thanks again Jan.....great message!
