I am a historian for a Creole plantation in St. John the Baptist parish. I am currently
working on turning my Masters thesis into a book on Creole women. While I have been able
to uncover some letters, diaries, and memoirs, the scarcity of material written by Creole
women compared to their Anglo American counterparts can be discouraging. I know that many
papers, diaries, letters, etc., written by Creole women remain in private hands. If any
families descended from Creole women possess documents that they would be willing to allow
me to see, I would greatly appreciate it. I am particularly interested in the time period
from 1704 to 1865, although memoirs written later describing life in antebellum Louisiana
would also be considerably useful. I respect the privacy of families and individuals and
would only use these sources with the express permission of the owners in order to better
the understanding of Creole women and Creole culture as a whole.
Thanks,
