Hello All,
Researching my husband's family. His grandfather, Virgel
Champagne/Champaine/Champine,
b 1842 Macomb County, MI, d 7/7/1925 married Rachel Perry 1/6/1868. The
Macomb county death records state he was divorced. However, when Virgel
passed he was living with Julia Maule. (I can't seem to find any info on
whether he and Julia were married.) After his death the children were placed
with other Champagne/Champaine/Champine families. Apparently after Virgel
died the children did not have contact with their mother Julia.
Cannot find any more info on Rachel and I have nothing on Julia. On the
baptism record of my husband's father, b 1902, Julia Maule is listed as the
mother and Vaugil Champagne is listed as the father. In latin is written
illegitimate. As Virgel was Catholic and married/divorced Rachel, he could
not marry again without special permission from the church. So, even if he
married Julia outside the church their children, if baptized in the church
would be considered illegitmate.
As I live in AZ I try to do as much as I can via computer. I have searched
on line for Julia Maule and cannot find out what has happened to her. This
past summer I was in MI and stopped at St. Mary's Catholic church in New
Baltimore and had some success in finding Virgel's gravesite. However I did
not get any info regarding Julia.
Would appreciate any ideas.
