A couple years ago I searched Minnesota Death Certificates for Champagnes. Since I
currently have the attention of so many Beaugrand-Champagne researchers from my last
posting, it may be a good opportunity to see if anyone has additional information on these
people.
========================================================================
The first person is Louis Beaugrand-Champagne born approximately 1850 in Michigan. I only
know of his existence because he is mentioned as spouse/father on a few
death certificates. His spouse was a Lepicier. The Lepicier's are all descended from
Louis Lepicier-Lanoix who was from St-Martin-de-Laon, Picardie, France. The first record
of Louis Lepicier is his marriage November 4, 1760 in Berthier to Marie-Anne Boucher
daughter of Alexis Boucher and Marie-Anne Martin. (Alexis is the brother of Eliza
Boucher's gr-grandfather Joseph for those of you following that line.)

The second family is that of Pierre Beaugrand-Champagne and Claire Ayotte married May 7,
1838. Several of their children came to Minnesota. There are several Rootsweb sources
tracing their ancestors.
Taken from the Red Lake Falls Era, Thursday, September 28, 1882 edition:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The mother of Rev. Father Champagne [Claire Ayotte] died on Tuesday evening [September 26,
1882], in this village [Red Lake Falls], after a brief illness. She was buried today in
the Catholic cemetary. A large number of people were present to pay the last tribute to
this highly esteemed and respected aged lady.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taken from the Red Lake Falls Weekly Messenger, April 05, 1883 edition:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Octave Champagne [Pierre's brother] proposes to cater to the wants of our citizens in
the bread, cake and confectionery line. He is building near the new west side hotel, a
neat bakery and will occupy it by June 1st.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taken from the Red Lake Falls Weekly Messenger, September 11, 1884 edition:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rev. Father Champagne has closed his pastorate in St. Joseph's parish, and will take a
long needed rest. He has been in Red Lake Falls since its earliest days, built the church
over which he has presided, and has been closely identified with the growth of both the
town and his congregation. He has extensive landed interests in and near town which will
for some time require his attention and will therefor continue to reside here. His
sucessor is Fr. Lemay who has for some time had charge of the church's
congregation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taken from the Red Lake Falls Weekly Messenger, February 12, 1885 edition:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fr. P. B. Champagne from Duluth has come to visit his old parish. He will return
Saturday.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fr. Champagne's brother Adolphe, forerly from Duluth has located in Red Lake Falls [in
Pierre's house].
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notice:
To whom it may concern. I will not be responsible for any debts or obligations contracted
by any person in my name without a written order from
me. P.B. Champagne, 02/10/1885.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Being one of the most prominent citizens of Red Lake Falls, Pierre was in nearly every
edition of the weekly newspaper. He seemed to have a falling out with his congregation in
the spring of 1884. Three priests and a bishop came to Red Lake Falls. One of the
priests Fr. Lemay was put in charge of the parish. Pierre was summoned to appear at the
diocese in St. Paul During the summer. Upon his return from St. Paul he promptly resigned
from the parish and moved to Duluth. In February, 1885 he turned over his house to his
brother Adolphe and never returned to Red Lake Falls again. He died of tuberculosis April
24, 1894 in Los Angeles.
Here's some additional information on his brothers Octave and Adolphe:
