They lived in Arles France and never came to America. Pierre was a soldier which is
mentioned in a baptism or marriage. There is a restaurant on the property in the French
Quarter that was once owned by the Champagnes. Can't remember the name at this time.
Pierre's first wife was the widow Bonvillain, and he raised her children along with
theirs. The children are mentioned at the second marriage. The first wife, was German
named Perinne Schaaf and in French she was called Catherine Mouton. Last name means Sheep.
Perinne is the German names attached to females and sometimes she may have been call
Chauff or Chauffin, which would have been the correct German term for females. It's a
little confusing.
Bonvillain was a soldier and carpenter and was killed in Memphis in the Chickasaw Wars.
Champagne also sold for his wife the properties that belonged to her first marriage.
After the second marriage,
Records show that Champagne exchanged properties with another couple to move to Pointe
Coupee and I believe the name was Bergeron, the original owner of the property was either
a teacher or an attorney because the house contained a large library with many books. He
and his 2nd wife had a son that died there.
There is a short letter, I believe it is housed in the Museum which once was the old Mint
in New Orleans. Original Spanish and French documents, some have been translated and some
have been published by the LGS. The Museum has a library of those publications as well.
The letter from the Champagne who lived in Mobile, because he was on the British side.
Letter to his brother Jean Bt.
I will have to find it.
Ok, I must quit for now. Have a lot of info and some of Charlotte Champagne's info she
shared with me.
