Hi Gary,
I did not mean to implied that I did not know my dad, which I didn't
since he die before I turn one year old, but I have 3 older siblings.
I met my grandfather once, away back when- LOL, but he die before I
was able to get any information from him.
I started getting into Genealogy because of my mother having a
stroke and can not remember the past very well. She would get very
frustrated and upset when she can't remember something. I see no
reason to upset her now at this stage of her life.
Every once in awhile she would talk about him, he was a tiff miner,
and how he was good to her brothers. That is what make it seem so
strange that no one has any knowledge of him or the surname Champ.
Do you think that Champ could have came from the name Beauchamp?
Thank for showing an interest.
Janet

Yes it is possible that the CHAMP name came from French ancestors.
Here are a few names from my database with CHAMP in the name.
Champagne, DeLongchamp, Deschamps, Beauchamp, Champeau(x),
Champoux, Marchamp, Champlain, Champigny, Bechamp, Bachamp...
My experience has been that some Francophones will split their names
and use part of it if the name has two separate words...
DeLongChamp = Of The Long Field
DesChamps = Many Fields or Of The Fields
BeauChamp = Nice Field
Or sometimes names just don't sound right in English or that
Anglophones have a hard time pronouncing or reading. It is hard for an
Anglophone to correctly say CHAMP. French does not have the "CH" sound
like in
English, the "A" sound is different than in English, and the "MP" is
silent.
In French, CHAMP sounds like SHAWN with a silent "N". (more nasal)
Champeau (SHAWn-POE )
Marchamp (MAR-SHAWn)
Champigny (SHAWn-PEE-GNEE)
Champagne (SHAWn-PAH-GN)
Champoux (SHAWn-POO)
Bechamp (BAY-SHAWn)
Anyways... If all you have is your last name you have an uphill
battle to find the rest. Perhaps your birth registration can supply
you with who
your father was.
Or a baptismal registration might give you leads if it lists
Sponsors / Godparents.
If your parents were wed in a Church, they quite often lists the
parents...
Then you will have your grandparents and (more than likely) where
your father
was baptized.
I wish you luck. Don't hesitate to ask questions

Subject: [QUEBEC] French Names
Hi List,
I have a question I am hoping someone could help me with.
My maiden name is CHAMP (& my special brickwall) and I was told
that Champ meant field in french.
I don't know french, my dad dying when I was about 1 year old and
it seem that the family quit talking french. Although every once in
awhile someone would said something in french, but that was in the
past. I was also told BEAUCHAMP meant beautiful field in french.
If Beauchamp & Champ mean almost the same thing isn't it possible
that Champ could have been derived from Beauchamp?
My question to put it delicate, true? Where can I or can I find
any reference on this?
Thank in advance for any help.
Janet
