Subject: Sorry tried to post this message but it was returned. Could you
explain how I should post in future
Hi,
I am a New Zealander living in Bahrain and would be glad to hear from anyone
who might have some information on any of the following, in particular
information that takes this family line further. My grandmother was
Katherine Champ. Address 160 Lever St, Holborne, Shoreditch, London 1816.
Born Mar 1887. Her father Charles J. Champ born 1846 Kensington London.
Married Sarah Ann Platt 1870.
Charles's mother is recorded as Alice Adolpha Duncan (Essex) married to John
Champ a porter in 1841, born 1816. Brentford Islington London MDX. The
couple had a surviving son Charles my great grandfather, born in Kensington
and a daughter Alice Champ.
Charles Champ, a printer/compositor married Sarah Platt in 1870 and the 1881
census shows them living at 160 Lever St. The couple had many children
possibly 12 - including Elizabeth 'Bessie', Florence, Edith - Edie, Adelaide
'Adie' and Lionel Bertram, possibly Charles 'Charlie'. I understand that
Lionel emigrated to Canada and two? sons died in 'The War' (WW1?).
There are a couple recorded in the IGI 1881 census with the same names John
and Alice Champ - John Champ born in 1816 NK Oxford - 65 years gardener
domestic service and Alice born in Essex 1805 - 76 years living at time of
census at 9 Melbourne Pl. Scholefield Rd, London. Could this be the same
couple?
Does anyone have further information on any of these Champ ancestors? I
would be particularly interested in taking the line back further. I was told
that our family name Champ was originally Les Champs but the correct version
was probably Des Champs with variations des Champs of des Champ.
Thanks and eager to hear more.
