Anyone know this family?
In Joseph Burton Martin's obituary, it is stated that he and his wife Caroline were
raised together in Wilson County TN. This could mean in same family as maybe Caroline was
fostered, or as neighbors. It implies they did know each other from childhood.
On 1850, Census, Mariah Chambliss, born 1801 in North Carolina, is listed next to Joseph
& Caroline. Mariah had an 11 yr old son, Henry born Tennessee. Also living with
Joseph and Caroline was her brother, Thomas Chambliss that married Mary Cox.
In looking at Wilson County Records, the 1830 Census list Henry Chambliss age 30 to 40,
with 5 boys under 15, wife 20- 30 and 1 girl 10- 20.
The 1840 census of Wilson County list Chambliss (no first name) with 2 boys 5 to 10, 1 boy
5 10 to 15 , 2 boys 15 to 20, and a man 40 to 50. One girl 5 to 10, 1 girl 10 to 15, one
girl 15 to 20, one woman 20 to 30 and one woman 30 to 40.
On Circuit court records of Wilson County I found listings of Henry Chambliss disturbing
public worship in March & July 1836.
On 1 Oct 1842, Henry and Robert Chambliss are charged with "Tipling".
On 30 Jan 1843 Robert Chambliss charged with distubing public worship. Robert could
possibly be a son.
I found Tax records of Henry Chambliss in Wilson Co with 45 acres in 1831 and on 1832 he
is listed but it gives no acreage.
I did not find any other Chambliss or Chambless listed in Wilson County from 1830 to
1840s.
