I am a descendant of Nancy Chambliss (b. 1782 in Darlington Co., SC.) She was a child of
a John Chambliss and his second wife. This line traces back to Robert (Row-ber) Chamnis,
1603, France to England and on to colonial Virginia.
Nancy was my 3 X g. grandmother who m. John Roark (b. 1773 in NC) I would think they may
have met after Nancy, her brother Stephen and several other Chambliss' left SC and
moved to northern Alabama. John Roark had many Roark kin in southern TN (Frnaklin Co.)
just across the border. 3-5 of their 7 children were born in AL. They moved Smith Co.,
TN, then Franklin Co., then west to Henderson Co. in abt. 1825. In 1834, John, Nancy, and
5 of the children moved to Coahuila Y Tejas (Texas). Two daughters stayed in TN and later
moved to MS.
Nancy Chambliss Roark d. in 1837.
I have copies of two letters from daughter Lucinda Roark to her oldest brother William M.
Roark in 1836 and 1837. Lucinda mentions cousin Joel Chambliss coming to MS from AL to
visit. Lucinda went to AL w/Joel. She also mentioned cousin Elizabeth Chambliss and
Uncle Stephen Chambliss.
The Chambliss Genealogy Records that I have seen do not show Nancy's name among John
Chambliss' children. I was told by a Chambliss Researcher that she was erroneously
left out or misnamed. Would appreciate your answer. Karen Chambliss Abraham, from Sonoma
City, CA has a large Chambliss Record. Nancy isn't mentioned among John's
children in this record either.
Doug Roark
