Dear Karen,
Does a Winona or Wynona Redding Chambliss fit into this family structure as
the likely grandmother to William Z. Chambliss?
Around 1870, William Z REDDING, his brother Thomas Searcy Redding and sister
Winona Redding left Monroe County, GA, where an uncle had taken over their
inheritance (must have been complicated)...basically all the men of the
Redding family but himself died in the war. Anyway, these three made their
way to ALABAMA, where Winona married a cousin on her mother's side. I
understood this man to be a BF Chambliss...but I'm not really sure. William
Zachariah, Thomas Searcy and Winona's mother: Elizabeth Frances ChamBLESS;
father: James Monroe Redding. Elizabeth Frances died in 1854 after tending
the sick during an epidemic. James Monroe Redding married a second time to
her cousin, Sarah ChamBLISS. (At some point the one family Chambless
enlarged, split up; one began to spell the name ending ISS, the other
ESS).
Anyway, these three children often get left off genealogical records because
of the maiden names of the 2 mothers being so close! I am descended through
William Z Redding, his mother Elizabeth Frances Chambless.
Winona was left behind in or around Tuskeegee Alabama where it is believed
she married, and the two brothers continued on to Texas, New Mexico and
Arizona. I don't know ANYTHING about what happened to Winona Redding
Chambliss, but if she married in 1870 and had children, those children
would have been old enough to have had this WILLIAM Z CHAMBLISS, born 1912
Mississipi.
If the Z of his middle name is for Zachariah, I would really love to study
this group of Chamblisses. I know that during the Civil War, when Sherman's
March stormed through Monroe County, William Z took some of the livestock
the family owned and made his way to Florida, where he stayed a while. So,
there was some connection for Florida and this family. By the way, their
father died in this time window, at the Battle of Griswoldville in nearby
Jones County. An uncle and some cousins also. Basically, the family was
totally devastated by the end of the war...truly RUINED!
I would LOVE to know what happened to Winona!
Any help?

Seeking information on the family of William Z. Chambliss WHO WAS born about
1912 in Mississippi.
He appears on the 1930 US Census for Jefferson County, Alabama as an inmate in
the Alabama Boy's Industrial School. This appears to have been some sort of
juvenile reform school. This type of facility could also have orphans, or
children whose parents can no longer care for them. All the "inmates" are
between the ages of 11-18 yrs and their race is shown as white. The census
shows Florida as the birth place of both his parents. William is listed as
being 18 years of age and born in Mississippi.
Would like to identify his parents, siblings, wife, children and
grandchildren.
Thank you so much, Karen Chambliss, California
