Hello Everyone,
I've just subscribed to the Chambless list. My line of Chambliss' spell
their name with an "i" instead of an "e," but I'm hoping that some
of us may
be able to make a connection since we know the spellings of names sometimes
changed down through the years for one reason or another.
I've been searching off and on for some time for information about my
great-grandparents and anyone before them. My family knows almost nothing
about anyone before my grandfather Elijah Byrd Chambliss. His father, Bunk
Chambliss, died when he was 8 years old and his mother died when he was 13 so
he remembered very little about them. I'll try to fill you in on what I do
know up to this point.
Bunk married Sarah Bounds sometime during the middle 1870's. We don't know
when or where either one of them was born, but they lived in Texas and
Oklahoma during my grandfather's childhood. Some members of my family
believe "Bunk" is a nickname, but we don't know for sure. Bunk had 1
brother
that we know of; Dow Chambliss. There may be others, we just don't know.
I'm not sure about the spelling on Dow, that's just what the family called
him. They followed work to Indian Territory in Oklahoma, (now known as Pauls
Valley.) My grandfather, Elijah, was born in Indian Territory in 1892. They
had 6 children, Maggie Lou, William Littleton, Green Berry Young, Marion
Pinkerton, Elijah Byrd and Davie (who died as an infant.) Bunk died in 1900
and was buried in Indian Territory. Evidently, the family returned to Texas
after Bunk's death because Sarah died in 1905 and is buried in Stoneburg,
Texas, in Montague County.
If anyone has any information about Bunk and Sarah or Bunk's parents, I would
be grateful for the help.
Thanks,
Vickie in Texas
