A few of us have been interesting in where the Tenn/Missouri groups came from.
We know that old Jacob Chamlee served in the NC Light Dragoons and got a land
warrant in NC (Wake Co area) and moved to Eastern Tennessee for awhile before
descending into old Anderson Co SC.Are those that resided later in Tennessee
from his line somewhere? On a few census records it says "born SC".
They perhaps traveled WAY up into Tennessee from South Carolina because they
had a few old uncles there or older relatives? The normal migration pattern
for any Chamblee or Chamlee living in South Carolina was straight to GA and
then on through, definitely NOT from SC to Tennessee. I would think there was
a specific reason for this migration. So, having these Chamlees in Tennessee
with a "born in SC" stamped on the census records of the older ones is mighty
strange.
Here are some records I pulled at the library over the weekend, some are
repetitious, but I will continue pulling all I can find and uploading them to
the list for descendants to see. The ancestors in question resided in
Tennessee around McMinn and Monroe Co Tenn, then some went to Missouri.
Adniron went from Missouri to Texas I believe.
MISSOURI CENSUS
1850, census, Polk Co. MO p. 28
356/356 Robert Chumly, 69 b. VA farmer
John Slattern 34 born TN
Melinda 25 b. TN
Robert 4 b. TN
Louis 2 born TN
NOTE: In contact with the Chumley organization about 4 years ago it was
learned the Chumley people more or less originated from early VA, probably are
very early cousins of ours from the same general lines. No proof, that's what
we all suspect from big stack of papers they sent me. We can disregard Robert
Chumley in Polk Co for the rest of our census studies as far as I'm concerned.
1860 Greene Co MO, June 29th census p. 230
Census index said "Wily Chamley" and entry in census book clearly had
"Wiley"...we know, thanks to Cindy, that this is Riley Chamlee:
385/385 Wiley Chamly 35 born SC
Sarah M. 28
Nancy J. 12
Nicholas 4
Delila A. 1
Solomon Horton 58 b. TN (we know from court papers in TN this is the father of
Riley's wife, Sarah M. Horton).
1860 census, Texas Co MO p. 994 Clinton Twp
256/238 William Chumey 21 farmer, #135, b. Tenn
Mary 18 born MO
Francis Holt 17 m. born MO attends school
Parry Holt 12 m. born MO attends school
Stephen Holt 10 m. born MO attends school
(I have NO idea if this is related to any of your relates, Cindy, Sandy, Rob,
Adele...)
for those of you who don't have this, this is Adele's husband's line and she
has done a good census study on him:
367/347 Texas Co MO p. 1014
A.J. Chamley (abstractor put "Chambers" in the index, but knowing old Chamley
and Chamblee handwriting the "Y" was clipped a little and it was
"Chamley" by
the sloppy census taker I think)
age: 28 farmer, $130, born TN
Eliza A. 28
Samuel 8
Thomas 6
Martha C. 4
David S.
Julia Ann 1
Other people of interest (it's not only who you know, you must look for who
you don't know who is also there):
1850 cenus
Bon. Chumley, Dade, p 51 (did not look up, looked like a real "Chumley" line)
Mary F. Chumley, Crawford Co p 786 (ditto)
M. Chambley, Phelps Co, p 28, looked up, (black)
Veterans Census Index for 1895 Missouri:
Samuel C. Chumbley, Lawrence Co SD 4, ED 120
Nicholas Shamel [Yes, this IS Nicholas Chamlee], Bollinge Co SD 2 ED 2
Wm. R. Shamblin, Greene Co SD4, ED61
(the book lists the family history films to see info about the people in this
book)
1860 census, Texas Co MO
259/241 H. Chaney 45, $200/600 b. Tenn
Parthenia 44
John G. 16
James H. 15
H.C. 12 m
Elisha T. 7
Benjamin A. 4
Paulina Ledbeater 35 f. born TN
(I only list him because he was also in Texas Co MO)
I looked for several hours on the Missouri Soundex for Mary Caroline Chamlee,
daughter of Riley (above) who married William Blakeman. I could not find Mary
or a William. I looked for Blackmon, Blackman, Blakemon/man, etc. It's easy to
miss things in the Soundex. If they had gotten married around 1850 we could
have chased them around using the AIS.
I have much more census work to do and book and periodical work as well,
saying nothing of the records on film.
