The following obituary appeared in "The News & Observer," Raleigh, North
Carolina, on Tuesday, March 6, 2001:
STATESVILLE -- Fred Garland Chamblee, 79, of 507 Berkshire Drive, died Sunday
evening, March 4, 2001 at the Iredell Memorial Hospital following a brief
illness. He was born in Spring Hope, Nash County, N.C., on June 20, 1921, to
the late Dr. Frank Garland Chamblee and Alga Richardson Chamblee. He was
educated in Nash County Schools, and attended Mars Hill Junior College. He
received a B.S. Degree from Wake Forest University and a J.D. Degree from
Wake Forest Law School. He set up practice in Statesville, N.C., on July 1,
1950, and remained in practice until March 31, 1996.
Mr. Chamblee was married July 12, 1952, to Ann Marie Upchurch, who preceded
him in death on June 27, 1996. They had two children, Claire Chamblee
Sensenig, and her husband, Jeff of Cary, N.C., Jean Chamblee Sweitz and her
husband, Eric of Moorpark, California. Three grandchildren, Christopher Lee
Phillips, Richard Willard Sweitz and Katherine Victoria Sweitz. Also
surviving are two sisters, Miss Dorothy Chamblee of Salisbury, N.C. and Miss
Frances Chamblee of Statesville, N.C.
He was an active member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, taught
Sunday School for many years, and held numerous church offices. Mr. Chamblee
was a charter president of the Statesville (Evening) Exchange Club, a member
of the Statesville Jaycees, and was president of the Greater Statesville
Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the NC Bar Association, Iredell
County Bar Association, and was a past president of the Iredell County Bar
Association. He was the former attorney for the Iredell County School Board
and attorney for the Town of Troutman. He was also actively involved in
numerous civic activities.
Memorial funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at
Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert W. Rollins Jr. and Rev.
Beverly B. Coppley officiating. A private burial at Oakwood Cemetery will be
held before the memorial service.
Mr. Chamblee will lie in state at Nicholson Funeral Home until the committal
hour.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Statesville (Evening) Exchange
Club and their wives present, and the members of the Iredell County Bar
Association.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial services.
