Here are some basics I have used for years. I had forgotten they are online.
They are also on CD, and you can buy them hard copy for a few cents at your
local FHC.
The links below are also known as "research guides". Research Guides in 8
1/2 x 11 format are available for every state, and many counties. They give
you history of your area, how the court clerk kept the records, and film # of
such records so you can order them (or you can look in the FHC card catalog
at your FHC, on a purchased CD, or online at
familysearch.org). They are
great reference guides to YOUR particulate state.
If you need help understanding these materials or how to find a specific film
such as death records of Georgia, or settlement of estates in Arkansas, etc.,
I'll be happy to find the EXACT film # you should be ordering from your FHC
if your FHC does not have such films (rental charge is about $3). If you go
through Salt Lake City you can pull ALL the films, look in their vast book
collection, all in logical order, for instance, for South Carolina books go
to the South Carolina section and look for the county (alphabetized), etc.
Back in 1940-1980s (with the exception of the Los Angeles FHC and the BYU
FHC in Provo, Utah), the ONLY way you could get filmed records was to go to
Salt Lake City or the county where your ancestor lived.
We are so lucky. Blessed.
North Carolina, United States Events and Time Periods
(if you are at a family history center, you can buy this North Carolina
research guide for about 50 cents. Hope you can afford it. Or.......it's
