Dear D'Ann,
Thanks for posting this information.
Can you say more about William's "running back and forth to Cherokee
Co."?
I don't know about this.
Thank you,
Suzanne

Below is 1860 census in Arkansas with Jarrett in it. Is better not to
base
where the person was born with the census unless you do a cumulative
census
of ALL years the person was alive, then as usual it's the
"preponderance of
evidence." It's quite possible with William running back and forth to
Cherokee
Co (which is how many miles away?) it is very possible Jarrett was
born in GA.
The best thing to do is make a careful census study starting from the
beginning. It is imperative. People traveled around like crazy in
those days.
1860 census, Columbia Co Arkansas
Jarrett Chamlee 48 b. GA
Elizabeth 43
N.M. 19
William 16
Tilitha 15 b. 1845
George W 14
Rebecca 12
Enoch J. 9
Jarrett 8
Darcas A. 3 f.
His father in 1850 and 1860:
1850: Cherokee Co GA census - 70 yrs old
William Chamble 70 M Farmer Born in TN (In 1860 censuses it was VA)
Dorcas 62 F Born in SC
Enoch 20 M
Elaine Seago 87 F Born in SC (mother of Dorcas)
1860: Cherokee Co GA census
William Chamblee 80 M Farmer Born in VA
Dorcas 78 F Born in SC
The variation of birthplace in William is probably because he wasn't
really
SURE. He knew his father had been in TN with a bounty warrant because
of
Jacob's service with the Light Dragoons in NC. They did not give land
in NC
for service, it always was OUT of NC. And his cousin, Joel Chambless
(yes sir)
also served as a Light Dragoon in the same company and also got land
in TN.
I am guessing, but I think William heard his father, Jacob was born in
VA and
perhaps the children reported the census or he did in a feeble state,
whatever. Many possibilities.
