FamilySearch (at least parts of it) are now up and running at:
www.familysearch.org
Their server will be understandably busy at times. If you use AOL, fire up
Netscape to use instead, for some reason for me Netscape seemed to be able to
make contact with the server when AOL (IE) would not. Don't ask me why. Maybe
you will have better luck.
Unlike when using FamilySearch at the FHC, you are required to put BOTH a
first name and a last name in order to perform a search with the new online
version. You can bring up CHAMBLER for CHAMBLEE though (at least it worked for
me).
***NOTE: Please remember that the IGI part of FamilySearch is a bunch of
people's genealogy and a small amount of extracted (double-entried)
information from original records. Other then the extractions from original
sources, you must never accept what is on the IGI or the AncestralFile without
reproving the lines yourself.
The Ancestral Part of it is JUST people networking, so very careful with that
as well.
The most valuable part when it is in full swing will be accessing the card
catalogue at the Family History Library. You will be able to see what books
your ancestors are listed in, like you do when you go to any FHC and use the
system. You will also be able to see what records they have on book, film, or
microfiche that you can order yourself at your local FHC.
Please note the CD's which you can order which have been available for a year
or two. I use them constantly.
