Hi all,
I came across some interesting information that I thought I would
share. I hope that I can write this so it makes sense. I have a copy of the
marriage license of Jarrett Chambe (Chamlee) and Elizabeth (Powell) Jones.
They were married in Hempstead County, AR on October 6, 1858. He was 46 and
the widow Jones was 41. The ages coincide with the approximate year of birth
that I have in my database.
According to the 1850 census in Hempstead County, Elizabeth, 34 was married
to a William Jones, 40 (October 1835 in Linestone Co., AL) with 6 children
living in the household: James, 19; Martha Tate, 13; Mary E., 11; Polly A.,
8; Tabitha P., 6; and Rebecca, 6/12. After Elizabeth married Jarrett, the
two youngest, Tabitha and Rebecca began using the Chamlee name. I am now
trying to determine if Dorcas Ann is the daughter of Jarrett & Elizabeth or
if she is the daughter of Elizabeth & William. I am inclined to think that
Dorcas is the daughter of Jarrett & Elizabeth.
I am now searching for someone with a 1850 Cherokee County, GA census to
look-up Jarrett's family there. Believe I may be able to find his first
wife, the mother of his boys, our biological grandmother. Anyone have access
to this census?
