I have a book called "History of Marshall County WV" published in 1984.
It's a great book with lots of pics, etc. The best part is there is a section of
biographies and autobiographies of different family members who lived there. Some are
just a few paragraphs and others are a few columns.
There are two pieces on the Chambers family. Here they are:
JOHN WESLEY CHAMBERS FAMILY
John Wesley Chambers was born in 1789 and died January 1, 1869. He married Elizabeth
Cecil who was born in 1790 and died Jun 1, 1867.
They were the parents of ten children, one of whom was Isaac Chambers. Isaac was born in
1811 and died March 23, 1862. He married Julia Ann Miller, who was born in 1820 and died
in 1906. After the death of Isaac, Julia Ann remarried John Pletcher. Isaac and Julia
Ann Chambers were the parents of eight children. Their son, Joseph Chambers married
Elizabeth Donalson Smith and had two sons, Clark A. and Wiley Andrew Chambers. Wiley
Andrew Chambers married Anna Lutricia Garey and were the parents of Robert Chambers. Two
separate families of Chambers settled in Aleppo Township.
Benjamin and Ephriam Chambers were related and of German origin. John Wesley Chambers was
of Scotch-Irish descent. Settling in Marshall County were James Chambers of Ireland and
Reason Chambers who came from Maryland.

CLARICE CHAMBERS:
I was born on June 18, 1904 in Cameron, Marshall County, WV. I was the daughter of T.D.
and Sadie Emery. My father taught school for 42 years in Marshall County. He was born
Feb 15, 1878 and died in Aug 1942.
My sister Beulah Dunham taught for 32 years in Marshall County. I taught for 27 years in
Marshall County as well.
I was married to William Chambers, son of George and Anna Chambers who worked for Columbia
Gas in Marshall County. My husband was born Feb 11, 1904 and died on Nov 10, 1980.
I have one son, Joseph Wayne Allen, born Jan 1, 1924 by a former marriage. He was
educated in Marshall County and graduated from Akron University with a B.A. degree in
Education. He taught for one year at Wadsworth High School. He works with the B and W in
Canton, OH. He served for three years in the Armed forces in World War II. He is married
to Belva Chambers.
Our way of travel in winter was by foot or sleigh. In summer we traveled by buggy or
surrey drawn by horses. After automobiles came into being, my father was the first one to
have a Model T Ford in our community. I learned to drive it when I was ten years old. My
father put a stop to my driving by carrying the keys in his pocket.
The reason for living in Marshall County was my grandparents and my parents were born
there. Michael and Margaret Burke Emery were the parents of my father. They lived on
Sally’s Blackbone near Lynn Camp. There were nine children in my father’s family; seven
boys and two girls.
I have one brother, Orville Emery, who lives on Merritt Island, FL. He has two sons, Dick
of Pittsburgh and Bob of Daytona Beach, FL. We grew up on a farm in Marshall County,
walked two miles to school with snow drifted over the top of the fences. There were no
school buses to pick us up. We grew up with nature. I think we became more aware of the
beauties of nature than the children of today.
For entertainment, we had box and pie socials. We visited our neighbors. We walked,
carrying a lantern to light our way. Refreshments would be cookies, donuts, apples,
popcorn and chestnuts roasting in the ashes in the fireplace.
After retiring in 1969, we came to Florida on vacation and decided to stay. My husband
and I had eight years together in Florida. It’s nice to go back to Marshall County once a
year to see the remaining members of the Chambers family, Laura Mackey, who will be 91
years old on Feb 24, 1984 and my sister, Beulah Dunham.
There were four boys and three girls in the Chambers family. None of the boys had
children, unfortunately, and there is no one to carry on the family name.
